Normally to exfoliate your skin, you would use an exfoliating scrub or sponge, or something fancy from Lush that’s filled with natural seaweed and coconut oil.

But not Nigella Lawson.

No, the 58-year-old appears to have come up with her own ingenious way of exfoliating, and it sounds, well, very… Nigella.

Talking about her biggest beauty hack, the mother-of-two revealed that her trick to getting silky smooth skin is by using Marigolds.

While chatting to her fans at a Q&A session in London, The Sun reported her saying: ‘I am the sucker who buys things.

‘I recently bought some washing up gloves with silicone bits on the palm for scrubbing. I exfoliate with them. I like them.’

We get where she is coming from, but we think we’d much prefer to use a sponge!

The star then went on to talk about her guilty pleasures and how she does not allow herself to feel guilty about any of them.

Another life hack we should all be getting on board with.

She said: ‘You should not have any guilt about pleasure. You should only ever feel guilt if you don’t take pleasure.

‘In certain moments I do like a bit of plastic bread with a cheese triangle on. That can be delicious.

She also gave a life hack on guilty pleasures (Pictures: Ten/The Project)

‘I like old fashioned sweets like rhubarb and custard sweets. The other day I did have a great need for some Milky Ways.’

We’ve all been there.

Just recently the TV chef has opened up about her views on healthy eating, and told a group of catering students in Toronto that people had become ‘a bit extreme’ with their eating habits.

‘A lot of so-called healthy eating is a cover-up for an eating disorder and I think people persecute themselves to what they do eat and what they don’t eat,’ she said.

She then revealed that some of her friends wouldn’t allow themselves to eat certain treats, only to binge on them later.

Cutting out entire food groups, she said, ‘doesn’t seem to make sense’.

‘You should eat a bit of everything,’ Nigella concluded.

Nigella Lawson forced to tell TV bosses not to airbrush her ‘sticking out stomach’

Nigella Lawson has revealed she has had to tell TV bosses in the United States not to airbrush her stomach.

The 58-year-old has cultivated her entire career on the love of food, but it turns out that some people want her to look like she doesn’t eat.

Nigella called out the ‘hatred of fat’ while replying to a tweet from Jameela Jamil.

The chef and food writer wrote: ‘I’ve had to tell American tv stations not to airbrush my sticking out stomach.

‘The hatred of fat, and assumption that we’d all be grateful to be airbrushed thinner is pernicious.’

Nigella’s revelation was met with shock from fans, who seemed baffled as to why anyone would want to Photoshop the TV star.

The mother-of-two had responded to a post by Jameela, with The Good Place star calling out a journalist who wrote an article reading: ‘Women shouldn’t be told how to appear, whether it’s a glossy magazine persuading us to slim down or Jameela Jamil beseeching us to look uglier for the benefit of society.’

Jameela, 32, tweeted: ‘She thinks you’re “UGLY” just as you are. She also doesn’t understand that a huge part of why I hate photoshop is how it’s used as a tool of erasure of ethnicities, our skin colour, our features. This is embarrassing white privilege and deep misogyny.

‘Don’t ever use the word “ugly” about anyone ever again. I don’t care how “respectful” you are towards me. I’m interested in how respectful you are to women. You don’t understand ethnic erasure because women who look like you have been the standard of beauty forever.

‘For the last time, airbrushing is used as a tool for ethnicity erasure, colourism, ageism, fat-phobia, ableism, racism and sexism. It’s there to make you hate your real face and body. It made me hate my face, my body and my ethnicity for the longest time as a young woman.’

The actress has recently embarked on a social media campaign against airbrushing and celebrities who promote detox teas – calling out Cardi B and Iggy Azalea for flogging the weight loss aids on Instagram.

Celebrity Gogglebox turns up heat as stars lose it over Nigella Lawson

Celebrity Gogglebox has had its moments, and the stars’ reactions to Nigella Lawson was definitely one of them.

The famous faces took to their seats in front of the small screen ready for an installment of Nigella: At My Table.

And well, it turns out Emilia Fox’s cousin Laurence has a thing for the famous chef.

As the cookery show started, Emilia turned to the 41-year-old and asked if he fancied the star.

Nodding his head, the singer laughed: ‘I could listen to her all day.’

Nigella started to make a sandwich, and Emilia couldn’t help but ask Lawrence if he’d like to share one with the cook.

Looking sheepish, he gushed: ‘I want to do the spaghetti game with her.’

Further on in the programme, the 59-year-old introduced a new chicken recipe, and pulled on some black gloves while preparing the meat.

‘She’s now putting on a pair of rubber gloves,’ the Gunfight hitmaker squealed before watching Nigella throw in a Vitelotte purple potato.

He smirked: ‘What I would give to be that potato.’

And Lawrence wasn’t the only one to crack jokes while Nigella was on the screen, as Rylan Clark-Neal got a lecture about the mother-of-two, from his own mum.

Awkward!

‘Blokes you know, watch her and like sort of get off on watching her,’ she explained to the former Big Brother star.

Looking all confused, the 30-year-old laughed: ‘What?’

‘Well, she’s very sexual towards… When she’s cooking,’ Linda said.

Still unsure as to what was going on, Rylan quizzed: ‘What? You think there’s a bloke sitting at home having a fiddle watching her cut up a leek?’

Celebrity Gogglebox continues Friday at 9pm on Channel 4.

Nigella Lawson credits daughter with helping her find her confidence after split from Charles Saatchi

Nigella Lawson has credited her daughter with finding happiness again after the demise of her ten-year marriage to Charles Saatchi.

The TV chef split from the advertising and art mogul in 2013, weeks after pictures emerged of Saatchi grabbing Lawson’s throat outside Scott’s restaurant in London.

After the incident, Nigella developed a fear of being seen in public – but says that she has overcome this thanks to her 25-year-old daughter Cosima, who she had with first husband, the late John Diamond.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, the 59-year-old said: ‘I have been forced to be guarded. I used to be more open and I’d like to think I will be again.

Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi

‘Cosima said to me, “Mum, would you rather be a real person like you or someone who has hair and make- up done to go to the supermarket? It is better to be a real person.” She’s right.’

Nigella was married to John from 1992 until his death aged 47 from throat cancer in 2011, and they had two children together, Cosima and Bruno.

The cook tied the knot with Charles Saatchi in 2003, but following their split in July 2013, Nigella alleged in court that she was subjected to ‘intimate terrorism’ by her husband and claimed his ‘controlling behaviour’ drove her to occasional drug use.

Saatchi was cautioned for assault following the pictures of him grabbing his wife’s throat, which he claimed was a ‘playful tiff’.

Despite having no formal training as a chef, the domestic goddess has become one of the most popular TV cooks in the UK with her shows Nigella Bites, Nigella Feasts and Simply Nigella, while she is currently a guest judge on MasterChef Australia.

And part of her appeal is her seductive manner of presenting and cooking, which has earned her the nickname ‘the queen of food porn’.

However, Nigella reckons she’s being ‘camp rather than being coquettish’, after using campness to battle her shyness.

She said: ‘It is not my business to worry about how I am perceived. When I meet readers that is now how they think of me.’

Boris Johnson has been elected as the new Prime Minister, beating Jeremy Hunt in a Conservative Party vote.

And Piers Morgan, Rylan Clark-Neal and Stormzy were among those flocking to Twitter to make their feelings known about the our new PM.

Nigella Lawson let her emojis do the talking, simply posting the emoticon of a woman with her hand over her face, to her 2.6million followers.

While Rylan took the opportunity to start his own race to be leader, telling fans: ‘If there’s a general election I’m running.’

We would totally vote for him, to be honest.

‘That’s what we’re going to do. We will defeat Jeremy Corbyn.’

Nigella Lawson opens up on mental health theory: ‘Anger is depression projected outwards’

Nigella Lawson has taken to social media to open up about her thoughts on depression.

The 59-year-old has stated that she believes depression to be the ‘opposite of vitality’ and that anger is usually ‘depression projected outwards’.

Taking to Twitter, the TV chef replied to a tweet made by novelist Matt Haig which read: ‘Depression is not the opposite of happiness. It is the opposite of wellness’, as she chose to refer to a quote made by writer Andrew Solomon.

‘I always think too of @Andrew_Solomon’s phrase: “depression is not the opposite of happiness: it’s the opposite of vitality,”’ Nigella replied.

Matt responds revealing that he sometimes went through what he described to be ‘depression with energy’.

‘For me, sometimes I had depression with energy,’ he said. ‘Because I often had it with hyper fast anxiety.’

‘True, and it can also come with extreme anger, often directed at oneself,’ a fan chipped in.

Nigella later shared the argument that considers depression to be ‘anger turned inwards’.

Thread from Nigella Lawson, Matt Haig and a fan talking about depression

‘Well, there is an argument that says depression is anger turned inwards, and anger is depression projected outwards,’ she added.

Nigella has been through a tough time in the past – with the food writer splitting from her husband of 10 years, Charles Saatchi, in 2013, weeks after pictures emerged of the advertising and art mogul appearing to put his hands on her throat outside Scott’s restaurant in London.

Following the incident, Nigella developed a fear of being seen in public – but she credits her 25-year-old daughter, Cosima, for helping her to overcome this.

‘I have been forced to be guarded,’ she recently told the Sunday Mirror. ‘I used to be more open and I’d like to think I will be again.

‘Cosima said to me, “Mum, would you rather be a real person like you or someone who has hair and make up done to go to the supermarket? It is better to be a real person.” She’s right.’

Cosima was born during Nigella’s first marriage to the late John Diamond, who passed away after suffering from throat cancer in 2001. The couple also had a son, Bruno.

Nigella subsequently married Charles Saatchi in 2003, and following their split in July 2013, she claimed in court to be subjected to ‘intimate terrorism’ by her husband.

He was later cautioned for assault following the pictures of him grabbing his wife’s throat, which he claimed was a ‘playful tiff’.

In the meantime, Nigella has continued to share recipes with her Twitter followers, following the launch of her own food photography app earlier in the year.

And in June, she opened the UK’s first cookery school for people living with cancer.

Piers Morgan and Carol Vorderman lead celebs sharing epic throwback snaps for #MeAt20 craze

Can you recognise the famous celebs posing for the #MeAt20 craze? (Picture: Twitter)

If there’s one thing we love, it’s a viral fad, and the #MeAt20 thing is really hitting the spot.

Basically, you find a photo of yourself as a gawky 20-year-old, post it online and wait for the ridicule/admiration to roll on in.

Celebrities have been getting stuck in too, with the likes of Piers Morgan, Carol Vorderman and Emily Atack surrendering their embarrassing photos to the internet forever.

Think ‘bad perms’, dangerously short shorts and some questionable haircuts.

You’re welcome, folks.

Piers Morgan led the charge, posting a snap of himself as a young whippersnapper dressed in tiny red lipstick print shorts.

He wrote: ‘M at 20 with my oldest journalist mate @robinmcgibbon – you’d never believe we both went on to write books about boy bands.’

Carol, meanwhile, shared a graduation snap, commenting: ‘Graduating age 20. 1981. Engineering. Cambridge Uni.

‘VERY bad perm. Inspired by Deirdre Barlow, John Bon Jovi with a hint of Cher.’

Inbetweeners star Emily looked – well, a bit like how she does now – with just her cardigan-over-dress combo giving the Noughties game away.

The 30-year-old posted: ‘With my melon head and tiny little body, that was criticised for being too fat even then.

‘You will never please everybody. So have that Easter egg for breakfast and relax.’

Actor Laurence Fox posted his acting headshot from the age of 20, quipping: ‘I’m pretty sure this is still my casting headshot.

‘I shall report myself for a violation of the Trade Descriptions act.’

Channel 4 news presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy looked frankly very dishy in his offering – a photo of him sandwiched between his female pals (lad).

The 50-year-old wrote: ‘The only #MeAt20 pic I have to hand – presenting the ‘seminal’ fashion show Posh Frocks and New Trousers for ITV.’

Just. Sublime.

Nigella Lawson supports trans rights as LGBTQ+ organisations thank her for speaking out

Nigella Lawson praised for supporting trans kids

Nigella Lawson has been praised for championing trans rights.

The celebrity chef has been thanked by numerous LGBTQ+ rights organisations and activists after she shared an article from a woman whose nephew came out as trans.

The opinion piece in the Independent, titled ‘I sympathised with gender-critical campaigners – until my nephew came out as trans’, was written by Nora Mulready, who said: ‘Gender-critical campaigners are fighting to ensure that the government insists on medical, not just social, transition for gender identity to be legally recognised.

‘They simultaneously accuse trans activists and even parents of trans children of “shunting them” down a medical route. This is both wildly different from the lived experience of these families, who tread carefully, sensitively, and cautiously with their children, as well as deeply hypocritical by the gender-critical campaigners who both insist on medical transition, whilst also condemning it.’

She added that while she initially hoped that her nephew was in a ‘phase’ that would ‘pass’, she began to see the contradictions in the debate and now sees ‘trans acceptance as a civil rights issue’.

Nigella, 60, posted the article on her Twitter, and tweeted: ‘A still small voice of calm.’

Stonewall and Mermaids both thanked Lawson for sharing the article with her 2.6 million followers, with the latter, a charity for transgender children and their families, writing: ‘Hi Nigella, it’s great to see you sharing this. X Calm not hate.’

Journalist and trans activist Paris Lees replied: ‘We need much more kindness and fairness when discussing these children’s lives. Thank you for being a sensible voice’, while cook and writer Jack Monroe wrote: ‘Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou [sic].’

And Jo Maugham QC tweeted: ‘Thanks for sharing that, Nigella. I hope that transphobia will soon become as socially unacceptable as racism and homophobia.’

Elsewhere, fans commended the TV star, proclaiming: ‘Nigella Lawson said trans rights.’

However, amongst the praise, many other also criticised Lawson for sharing the article, and argued that it is not bigoted to be against self-identification while sharing articles about gender critical ideology and people who have detransitioned.

Lawson’s post came after JK Rowling handed back a human rights award after the president of Robert F Kennedy Human Rights said she was ‘profoundly disappointed’ with the author’s views on trans rights.

The Harry Potter star has argued that same-sex attraction is erased if sex ‘isn’t real’, and believes a ‘medical scandal’ is brewing around gender reassignment surgery.

JK Rowling has returned the award (Picture: Bennett Raglin/Getty Images for for Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights)

Rowling, 55, denied being transphobic, and wrote in a statement on her website: ‘I’ve been particularly struck by the stories of brave detransitioned young women who’ve risked the opprobrium of activists by speaking up about a movement they say has harmed them.

‘After hearing personally from some of these women, and from such a wide range of professionals, I’ve been forced to the unhappy conclusion that an ethical and medical scandal is brewing. I believe the time is coming when those organisations and individuals who have uncritically embraced fashionable dogma, and demonised those urging caution, will have to answer for the harm they’ve enabled.

‘RFKHR has stated that there is no conflict between the current radical trans rights movement and the rights of women. The thousands of women who’ve got in touch with me disagree, and, like me, believe this clash of rights can only be resolved if more nuance is permitted in the debate.’

Earlier this year, Father Ted creator Graham Linehan – who has supported Rowling – was permanently suspended from Twitter following numerous tweets which broke the platform’s guidelines; the writer had tweeted ‘men aren’t women’ in response to a transgender Pride post.

There’s no denying that avo on toast is delicious.

Avocado on sourdough has been quite the breakfast staple over on Instagram – but now there’s a new brekkie item in town.

Social media users are loving cauliflower cheese on bread now.

Even superstar chefs are getting in on the action including Nigella Lawson, who retweeted a recipe of the meal.

The 60-year-old London chef shared a recipe by Scottish photographer Del Sneddon, who served cheesy cauliflower florets on two slices of thick toast.

Since then, people have been creating their own creamy cauli-cheese on toast meals.

With many people hating on the humble cauliflower, this gooey cheese mashup might be the perfect way to add the vegetable to your diet.

Ingredients

  • Two slices of toast
  • Two cauliflower florets
  • Mozarella
  • Cheddar cheese
  • 20g butter
  • 20g flour
  • 100ml milk
  • Mustard powder
  • Nutmeg

Method

  1. Toast two slices of thick bread and set it aside after setting the oven to gas 9
  2. Then, boil two cauliflower florets for ten minutes, drain them, and set them aside
  3. You’ll then need to make a roux – a white sauce – by adding 20 grams of butter to a pan and then the same amount of flour
  4. Then slowly add 100ml of milk and whisk on low heat until the sauce starts to thicken.
  5. Add two tablespoons of mustard powder and a pinch of nutmeg. Of course, you can add seasoning to your own tastes
  6. Then add half a cup of Mozarella and half of cheddar cheese. Stir it till it becomes a beautiful gooey mixture
  7. Let it cool for five minutes before pouring it onto the unbuttered sides of your toast
  8. Leave it in the oven until it’s golden on top and voila, you’re done.

Nigella Lawson announced she is making a TV comeback with Cook, Eat, Repeat, right in time for Christmas.

And we are absolutely beside ourselves with excitement.

Taking to Twitter, the celebrity chef confirmed she has a new series on the way next month, as well as a festive special in December.

‘Nearly finished filming the series that accompanies my new book #CookEatRepeat (and the Christmas Special!),’ the 60-year-old tweeted.

‘The series will air on @BBCTwo from November and the Christmas Special will go out, unsurprisingly enough, in December.

‘No info on dates outside the UK yet, I’m afraid.’

Fans were clearly thrilled with the news, flocking to brand Nigella the ‘essence’ of Christmas.

Santa, who?

‘Hurray, a Christmas Special – just what we need, and especially this year,’ one penned.

‘(Panettone Stuffing Squares already on my “to make” list and, no doubt, good old Parmesan Shortbreads.)’

‘Can’t wait to see it…Nigella is the essence of Christmas……,’ another agreed. ‘Just love her programmes….

‘Her cranberry mince pies are wonderful if I do not make them at Christmas the family cause a riot….’

A Twitter user said: ‘Can’t wait, really enjoy your shows especially the Christmas ones with your kitchen glowing with fairy lights, feeling all warm & cosy already.’

While a follower added: ‘I absolutely adore watching your Christmas cooking series, fire on and a glass of wine and it makes everything better x especially this year!!!’

Honestly same.

The new series will be Nigella’s first show to be broadcast on BBC Two in three years – following the successful Nigella: At My Table in 2017.

But the kitchen queen hasn’t been resting on her laurels, instead she judged the Australian version of MasterChef and appeared on the US series last year.

Nigella Lawson not taking her health for granted after early deaths of mum, sister and husband from cancer

Nigella Lawson is grateful for her health after the early deaths of family members from cancer.

The TV cook is choosing to focus on keeping fit rather than ‘dwell’ on turning 60.

She sadly lost her mother Vanessa Salmon, 48, in 1985 to liver cancer, her sister Thomasina to breast cancer in 1993 aged 32 and her husband John Diamond to throat cancer in 2001 aged 47.

Nigella says being healthy is far more important than how you look as you get older.

She told Good Housekeeping magazine: ‘I’m not a planner – apart from when it comes to food. But, to be completely honest, I’ve never been able to take for granted that I’d be alive by this age.

‘My mother died at 48 and my sister at 32. And then John at 47. So, even if I were the sort of person who planned ahead, I don’t think I would have seen myself here…I kind of think you can’t do anything about it so why complain?’

The food writer went on: ‘I also know what the alternative is, so it feels wrong when you’ve been surrounded by people who have died young to say “My hair’s awful, I’ve got to get my roots done” or “My hands look like lizards”.

‘So I don’t dwell on it. As long as you’re healthy, that really is the most important thing.’

The TV star is coming back to our screens just in time for Christmas with Cook, Eat, Repeat.

The new series will be Nigella’s first show to be broadcast on BBC Two in three years – following the successful Nigella: At My Table in 2017.

The cookery queen, who is mum to daughter Cosima, 25 and son Bruno, 23, also appeared on MasterChef Australia and the US version last year.

Nigella Lawson has revealed she doesn’t like to plan too far ahead in life, after losing several of her family members young made her realise nothing is guaranteed.

The TV chef, 60, revealed on the Emma Barnett Show on Radio 5 Live that she feels wary about putting things into her diary for several months’ time as anything could happen.

She explained: ‘I think if you’re surrounded by people who have died young – my mum was 48, my sister was 32 and my late husband John was 47 – you soon realise that getting to an age cannot be taken for granted.

‘I don’t mean to say I went around catastrophising about it, but I certainly wouldn’t presume… even if I am putting in a diary date for six months ahead, I always have a slight thing that makes me say, “Well, what? Is this going to be…”’

Nigella added that the current coronavirus pandemic and the uncertainty it has caused has made others think twice about planning too far ahead, too.

She said: ‘I think perhaps we all have started thinking a bit more in that way. It’s not a morbid thought, because we have all seen since the pandemic that so many things that you take for granted, cannot be taken for granted.

‘It makes you look at the individual days more, either in gratitude or horror and sometimes a mixture.’

Nigella lost her mother Vanessa Salmon to liver cancer in 1985, her sister Thomasina to breast cancer in 1993, and her husband John Diamond to throat cancer in 2001.

The cook and food writer is returning to screens ahead of Christmas for Cook, Eat, Repeat, with the new series being Nigella’s first show to be broadcast on BBC Two in three years, after the successful Nigella: At My Table in 2017.

She recently told Good Housekeeping that losing so many of her loved ones at young ages made her not ‘dwell’ on things like her looks, as being healthy is so much more important.

‘I also know what the alternative is, so it feels wrong when you’ve been surrounded by people who have died young to say “My hair’s awful, I’ve got to get my roots done” or “My hands look like lizards,”’ she said.

‘So I don’t dwell on it. As long as you’re healthy, that really is the most important thing.’

Nigella Lawson apologises for licking fingers on Saturday Kitchen: ‘It was hideously wrong of me’

Nigella Lawson has apologised after being spotted licking her fingers during an appearance on BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen before serving a cake to others.

During Saturday’s episode of Saturday Kitchen, Nigella joined presenter Matt Tebbutt and chef Bryn William in the kitchen as the trio whipped up a variety of appetising, autumnal meals, including a beetroot tarte tatin and pollock with potted shrimp butter.

Near the end of the programme, it was Nigella’s turn to show off her culinary prowess, demonstrating how to prepare a simple marzipan loaf cake.

After preparing the ingredients for the cake, the food writer could be seen wiping off excess cake batter from the edge of the tin with her finger, before placing her finger in her mouth.

Then, after putting the cake in the oven, she licked her fingers again.

Presenter Matt made a point of mentioning the fact that Nigella had licked her fingers, telling her that there was a tap behind her if she needed it, to which she replied: ‘I didn’t mean to do that, it’s just because I didn’t have a cloth on me.’

Nigella then served a pre-prepared cake to Matt and Bryn, prompting several Twitter users to point out that she hadn’t washed her hands before doing so, a significant fact given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Following the show, Nigella shared a tweet thanking Saturday Kitchen for having her, while also apologising for her gaffe.

‘Thank you @matt_tebbutt @Brynwchef @jollyolly and everyone at @SaturdayKitchen for such a great time,’ the 60-year-old said.

‘In fact, I felt so at home, I completely forgot myself and licked my fingers. No excuse though: it was hideously wrong of me.’

Nigella added that she is ‘so Covid obsessive’, which is why she feels ‘appalled’ by the mistake.

‘Sorry,’ she added at the end of the tweet.

Several people shared supportive messages for Nigella, stating that it was simply an unintentional mistake.

‘Don’t be sorry about it! It happens, especially when you’re doing the thing you love,’ one person said.

‘Chefs may not lick their fingers, the spoon or the bowl, but the best home cooks do! You were simply in the moment,’ another added.

Nigella has apologised to Victoria Coren Mitchell over Twitter, after her new show inadvertently caused Only Connect to be moved around in the TV schedules.

Nigella: Cook, Eat, Repeat arrives on BBC Two next Monday at 8pm, which means Only Connect is being moved half an hour earlier than usual to 7.30pm.

Victoria tweeted to let fans of the show know about the move, saying that she didn’t know why BBC bosses were ‘messing around’ with the times – something Nigella quickly cleared up.

Victoria wrote: ‘Next week, for reasons best known to itself, [BBC Two] moves Only Connect to 7.30pm. NO, I DON’T KNOW WHY THEY MESS AROUND WITH IT EITHER.’

The presenter added: ‘So if you like things to happen as normal… well, 2020 is a living nightmare. But at least Only Connect is on at 8 o’clock tonight!’

It wasn’t long before Nigella chipped in to apologise for the change-up, saying: ‘I’m afraid it may be my fault.’

Victoria, thankfully, took the news incredibly well.

‘It’s absolutely not your fault!’ she wrote. ‘I just got the new book and it looks amazing, and perfectly timed for being at home cooking. There is a problem but it absolutely isn’t the arrival of your exciting new series!.’

Nigella is back on the box next week, sharing a selection of favourite recipes and the stories behind them on the new show, just in time for the run up to Christmas.

It’s a welcome return from the celebrity chef, who recently got into a spot of trouble after mistakingly licking her fingers during an appearance on BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen before serving a cake to others.

Only Connect is one of the toughest quizzes on TV, following two teams of contestants finding connections within a series of seemingly unrelated clues.

First arriving in 2008, it moved to BBC Two in 2014 after developing a cult following on original channel BBC Four.

Only Connect airs on Monday nights on BBC Two.

Nigella Lawson’s fish finger bhorta recipe sparks divided reaction: ‘Looks like an absolute game changer’

A fish finger recipe featured on Nigella Lawson’s new show Nigella’s Cook, Eat, Repeat has really divided the nation.

In the first episode of the series, which aired on BBC Two on Monday evening, Nigella showed her viewers how she cooks a fish finger bhorta, a traditional Indian cuisine consisting of lightly fried mashed up vegetables.

The TV cook explained that she was inspired to make the recipe after seeing a tweet shared by journalist Ash Sarkar, who described it as ‘nostalgia in a dish’.

After frying some onions, Nigella made the dish by adding ingredients including chilli, ginger and mustard, before adding oven-cooked fish fingers, which she broke up with a spatula.

Some people watching the show thought the recipe looked absolutely delicious, with one person stating: ‘Nigella’s Fish Finger Bhorta looks like my next hangover meal!’

‘My God @Nigella_Lawson your fish-finger bhorta looks like an absolute game changer,’ another viewer said, while another remarked that the recipe provided ‘just the inspiration I needed to get me through #Lockdown2’.

Others cast their doubts on the recipe, with one Twitter user saying it looked as though Nigella ‘just mashed up a fish finger’.

Another said that they wondered ‘what the Gogglebox verdict will be’ on the recipe.

‘I say this with fondness and respect: Nigella is ludicrous but 10/10 would eat that fish finger mush,’ one viewer stated.

Nonetheless, while opinion was divided, the majority appeared to be in favour of what Nigella describes on her website as her ‘absolute go-to’ when in need of ‘vibrant sustenance and delicious comfort hits’.

Fish Finger Bhorta Recipe

Ingredients:

For the pink-pickled onions

  • ½ red onion
  • red wine vinegar or lime juice to cover

For the bhorta:

  • 2 (total weight approx. 300g) regular onions
  • 2 red chillies
  • 2 fat cloves of garlic
  • 1 x 15ml tablespoon finely grated fresh root ginger (approx. 50g / 3-inch chunk)
  • 12 frozen fish fingers
  • 3 x 15ml tablespoons cold-pressed rapeseed oil or vegetable oil
  • 2 x 15ml tablespoons english mustard (from a jar)
  • 2 teaspoons sea salt flakes (or 1 teaspoon fine sea salt)
  • 125 grams young spinach
  • 1 lime
  • 3 x 15ml tablespoons roughly chopped fresh coriander (plus more to serve)

Method:

  1. Make your pink-pickled onions as far in advance as you can: at least 2 hours, and up to 24. Half the red onion and cut into half-moons. Put into a jar with a lid, or a bowl that you can cover. Pour red wine vinegar (or lime juice), pressing down on the onions until they are all just immersed. Leave to steep
  2. When you’re ready to make and eat the bhorta, heat the oven to 220°C/200°C Fan. Peel and slice two regular onions into fine half-moons, deseed chillies and slice them finely, and peel the garlic. If skin is tough, peel the ginger (using the tip of a teaspoon) then grate it finely to give 1 tablespoonful.
  3. Put the fish fingers on a baking sheet and cook for approx. 20–25 minutes, slightly longer than the packet directs to ensure the breadcrumb coating is really crisp.
  4. Meanwhile, warm the oil in a large frying pan/wok-shaped stir-fry pan and cook the onions over medium-low for 20 minutes, stirring regularly, by which time they will be pale gold and soft.
  5. Add sliced chillies, stirring all the while, for 3 minutes, then stir in the grated ginger, mince or grate in the garlic, and cook, still stirring, for another 2 minutes. Spoon in the mustard and salt, stirring to combine, then add the spinach leaves and let them wilt in the pan for 2–3 minutes, stirring regularly, then squeeze in the juice of the lime.
  6. Take pan off the heat while you get the fish fingers. Break them up a bit with a spatula then add them to the wok or frying pan. Toss everything together, breaking them up further and mashing them into the pan, then sprinkle over the coriander.
  7. Serve topped with the pink-pickled onions, adding extra chopped coriander if wished.

Nigella recently issued an apology to writer and presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell, after her new show Nigella’s Cook, Eat, Repeat resulted in quiz show Only Connect being moved half an hour earlier than usual to 7.30pm.

Nigella Lawson’s plans for a banana skin has really floored viewers

Nigella Lawson floored viewers of her brand new show Cook, Eat, Repeat after deciding to throw old banana skins into a curry.

The first episode of the journalist’s BBC cookery series aired last night and after dividing fans with her fish finger bhorta, she turned her attention to everyone’s favourite lockdown baking ingredient – the banana.

First up, Nigella transformed the fruit into a gloriously rich and gooey chocolate tahini pudding. But then, she opted to slice up the leftovers and throw them into a hearty main course.

Sharing her thought process, Nigella explained: ‘I admit, not totally visually appealing, but there’s something always so gratifying about using up every last scrap.

‘And all I do to get the banana skins ready for cooking is cover them in boiling water, add a bit of turmeric, a bit of salt and leave the water to cool.’

She continued: ‘It’s all about the texture and these always go so velvety and just swell and soften with the flavour of the curry sauce.’

Naturally, many viewers were taken aback by Nigella’s banana skin curry and let rip their thoughts on social media.

‘OK, Nigella, I’ll follow you to many places but Banana Skins is a step too far,’ wrote one.

Echoing a similar sentiment, another said: ‘C’mon Nigella, throw the banana skins away, NO-ONE is copying that, surely.’

After the show aired, Nigella held her hand on her heart and vowed that banana skin curry is actually delicious.

‘Thank you everyone for your lovely comments,’ she penned on Twitter. ‘I will reply to as many as possible tomorrow. For now, , let me just say 1) I hope I didn’t traumatise you too much with the banana skins (I promise you the curry is divine) and 2) I’m very grateful for your all-round gorgeousness xx.’ (sic)

Nigella isn’t the first TV chef to put banana skins to good use.

In April, Great British Bake Off’s Nadiya Hussain revealed that not only can we can eat the skin of a banana but also shared a crafty recipe which turns it into ‘pulled pork’.

The television chef joined Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard where she told audiences that it’s vital that we shift the way we think about food during the coronavirus pandemic.

‘I’ve been cooking banana peel forever, we always cook banana peel,’ she gushed. ‘I thought to myself, I have to share this!’

Nigella’s Cook, Eat, Repeat continues on Monday at 8pm on BBC Two.

Nigella Lawson shares ‘iconic’ shower cap hack for making bread on Cook, Eat, Repeat

Nigella - Cook Eat Repeat shower cap

Nigella Lawson’s methods have divided the nation in her new series Cook, Eat, Repeat so far, but there’s one thing all viewers have agreed upon – she knows how to make a shower cap work in the kitchen.

Her banana skin curry and fish finger bhorta might not have been to everyone’s tastes, but the presenter’s brilliant baking hack on Monday night’s show that everyone could get behind.

After making fans envious with a leopard print knife last week, Nigella had another surprise up her sleeve – a leopard print shower cap perfect for proving dough.

As it turns out, the shower cap is a pretty great tool in the kitchen as well as the bathroom. It came in handy while Nigella demonstrated how to make the perfect old fashioned Sandwich Loaf.

Rather than using a moist tea towel or a cling film, Nigella covered her bowl with the snazzy elasticated cap, and it helped the dough to prove like a dream.

She also reassured fans that the cap had never been worn, just in case anyone was wondering.

Fans praised the hack as ‘iconic’, adding that baking the tip was ‘worth the licence fee alone’.

After making the loaf, and showing us how to butter the perfect slice of toast (involving two layers of butter and a liberal sprinkling of sea salt), Nigella used the bread to make a sumptuous-looking chicken sandwich.

It comes after Nigella floored viewers by deciding to throw old banana skins into a curry on her new show last week. After using the fruit for a stunning chocolate tahini pudding, the presenter sliced up the leftovers and threw them into the main course. Safe to say, fans weren’t sold on the dish.

‘I’ve been cooking banana peel forever, we always cook banana peel,’ she later told Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard on Good Morning Britain. ‘I thought to myself, I have to share this.’

Nigella’s Cook, Eat, Repeat continues on Monday at 8pm on BBC Two.

Does egg belong on pizza? Nigella Lawson divides fans with Holly Willoughby dubbing it ‘something out of the bin’

$

Nigella Lawson has shared her love of a good poached egg on top of leftover pizza – but has divided some of her fans in the process, with This Morning’s Holly Willoughby comparing it to something out of the bin.

Showing us how to jazz up those Sunday morning leftovers, the celebrated cook shared a photo of a piece of delicious pizza, topped with a runny egg over the weekend.

Alongside the snap, Nigella wrote: ‘Now this is what I call a breakfast — leftover pizza from my Friday night order, reheated and topped with a poached egg and a splodge of chilli crisp.’

The word splodge may divide others for a whole other reason, but doesn’t it just sound delicious?

We suppose this is where we chime in and insist we do realise egg on a pizza is hardly the wildest of culinary ideas, seeing as a Florentine pizza involves cracking one right in the middle of the dish before baking.

But for morning TV host Holly, we can only assume we won’t be seeing her adding one from the carton when she next orders a takeaway pizza.

As she dissected Nigella’s effect of influencing our breakfast – following her tips on the perfect toast, should you be interested – Holly and Phillip Schofield shared their thoughts on her latest offering.

Holly said: ‘I’m kind of loving all of this I have to say, but this week she has divided food fans again by suggesting breakfast of an egg on top of a leftover pizza.

‘So this is the picture of the egg. So you get your pizza from the delivery, you wait for it to go cold and then you pop an egg on it.’

Nigella Lawson

Phil added: ‘It looks like something that’s just been run over by a car.’

Not done just yet, Holly hilariously quipped: ‘It looks like something that’s come out of the bottom of a bin, I think.’

Now, to some, such an accompaniment of the carby fave was shocking with one follower of Nigella’s exclaiming on Instagram: ‘[This] should never be called a pizza!! It’s a disgrace to the food of the gods!’

However, to others, this was the most genius idea ever, as another applauded they ‘loved to see it’, which we, in turn, love to see.

That was backed up by one fan who wrote on Instagram: ‘Oh now that is a good breakfast.’

Bon appetit!

Nigella Lawson stuns Cook, Eat, Repeat viewers with ‘butter facial’ remark while making mash

Nigella Lawson left Cook, Eat, Repeat viewers stunned on Monday night after she said ‘butter facial’ while making mash potato.

In the episode, which aired on BBC Two, Nigella showed viewers how to make brown butter colcannon (which is basically posh mash potato with kale in it).

The celebrity chef began her cooking demonstration by explaining that you begin the dish by cooking the potatoes whole, leaving the skin on them.

She then began to mash the potatoes and added kale, while chopping spring onion separately.

Next came melting the butter as she explained: ‘I think of it as caramelised butter with all of the gorgeousness that implies.’

‘Is there anything better than a butter facial?’ she added.

Nigella Lawson

The TV chef then casually added the spring onions to the butter, before mixing it in with the potato.

Voila!

Taking to Twitter after the segment, viewers couldn’t get over Nigella saying ‘butter facial’ on TV.

‘Is there anything better than a butter facial?’ says Nigella, quite earnestly, and I… well… probably… no?’ one viewer tweeted.

Another said: ‘Urban Dictionary busily adding butter facial to its ever-growing list.’

One added: ‘Is there anything better than a butter facial? I am sitting in my living room with my entire family, trying not to laugh out loud! Nigella taking innuendo to whole new levels!’

Elsewhere in the programme, Nigella cooked up some black pudding meat balls and Pasta with cavolo nero and ’nduja.

How to make Nigella's Brown butter colcannon

Ingredients

  • 1–1.25kg/2lb 4oz–2lb 12oz Kerr’s Pink, Golden Wonder or Rooster potatoes, preferably of a uniform size, scrubbed
  • 200g/7oz stripped and torn kale (weight once stripped from the stems)
  • 250ml/9fl oz full-fat milk
  • 150g/5½oz unsalted butter cubed
  • 4 spring onions, thinly sliced
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

  1. Put the potatoes, whole, into a large pan of salted cold water and bring to the boil. Partially cover the pan and cook at a robust simmer (checking that the pan isn’t boiling dry and that the water isn’t bubbling so fiercely the potatoes break into pieces) until the potatoes feel tender when you pierce them gently with a fork. Smaller potatoes will take around 40 minutes, larger ones around 1 hour.
  2. Cook the kale in a small amount of salted boiling water for 5 minutes or until it’s soft and then drain. When you can handle it without burning yourself, squeeze out the excess water and put the kale back in the hot pan, cover the pan and leave to one side.
  3. Once your potatoes are tender, gently take them out of the pan (draining them in a colander may make them disintegrate and get waterlogged) and place on a board. Empty out the pan and give it a quick wipe with kitchen paper. Put it back on the turned-off hob and return the potatoes to the pan to dry out for a couple of minutes.
  4. Warm the milk in a jug in the microwave. Mash the potatoes. I like the texture from the skins, so I simply pour in the warmed milk and set to with a masher. (Whatever you do, don’t use a stick blender or you’ll turn them to glue.) Fold in the cooked kale and season to taste. Put the lid on while you make the brown butter and warm a serving dish.
  5. Put a small heatproof jug by the hob. Melt the butter in a heavy-based saucepan over a gentle heat. Once the butter’s melted, turn the heat to medium and cook, swirling the pan regularly, for about 7 minutes, until the butter starts to turn a deep golden brown, with dark speckles at the bottom of the pan. Remove the pan from the heat and add the sliced spring onions, which will make the butter sizzle furiously.
  6. Pour a third of the brown butter into your little jug and the rest into the potato pan. Beat the brown butter into the colcannon and then scrape into your warmed dish, making swirls in the top of the colcannon with your spatula. Pour the remaining brown butter on top and take to the table.

Nigella’s Cook, Eat, Repeat airs Mondays at 8pm on BBC Two.
