Nigella Lawson and Jessica Chastain have led tributes to Richard E Grant’s wife of 35 years Joan Washington, following her death aged 41.

Washington was a voice coach with nearly 40 years experience in the film industry, and worked with actors including Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone and Vanessa Redgrave.

Her husband Richard, known for films including Withnail And I and Can You Ever Forgive Me? confirmed she died on Thursday, in a post on Twitter, and described her impact on their family as an ‘immeasurable gift’.

Jessica Chastain, who worked with Washington on films including The Debt, 2011’s Coriolanus starring Ralph Fiennes and Crimson Peak, shared a picture with the late coach and tweeted: ‘My heart is broken. Joan Washington had such a profound impact on me, yes as an artist, but mostly as a woman. I’ve looked toward her. Her strive towards excellence made her the celebrated dialect coach she was.

‘We worked together on The Debt, Poirot, Coriolanus, Miss Julie, Crimson Peak, The Zookeeper’s Wife, & The 355. Every day I was excited to go to work and giggle with Joan. She was a barometer of truth with a wicked sense of humor. I loved her very much.

‘The way she celebrated her family has been very meaningful to see over the years. My heart goes to her beloved Richard and Oilly. You were always her North Star.’

Nigella Lawson tweeted: ‘What a wonderful woman Joan Washington was. And how devastating to have to say ‘was’. My heart’s broken for @RichardEGrant and @OliviaGranted. May her memory be a blessing.’

Musical theatre star Elaine Page tweeted: ‘It’s heartbreaking to hear of Joan Washington’s passing. She was special both as a teacher & as a friend. Never to be forgotten. My deepest sympathy to Richard & all the family.’

The Crown star Jason Watkins described Washington as ‘incomparable’ and recalled receiving lessons from her as a young actor.

‘Joan taught me dialects and accents when I trained at @Rada and beyond,” he said.

‘I have made my career using accents and dialects. I owe her everything. Such a terrible loss to @RichardEGrant and us all. Rest in Peace.’

Comedians Sarah Millican, Dawn French and David Baddiel were also among those sending messages of support.

Dawn tweeted: ‘Joan Washington will ALWAYS be remembered by those of us who knew her & were taught by her, as a PHENOMENAL WOMAN. So much love to @RichardEGrant & all the family.’

Richard, 64, announced the news on Friday by sharing a video of them dancing together to the song Only You by The Platters on Twitter.

He wrote: ‘ONLY YOU! Joan – Love of my Life & Giver of Life to our daughter Olivia.

‘Our hearts are broken with the loss of your Life last night. 35 years married & 38 together.

‘To be truly known and seen by you, is your immeasurable gift. Do not forget us, sweet Monkee-mine.’

He and Washington married in 1986 and had a daughter, Olivia, and Tom, a son from Washington’s previous relationship.

Washington, from Aberdeen, trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and had nearly 40 years experience in the film industry as a voice and dialect coach.

Among her early projects in the mid-80s were Yentl starring Barbra Streisand, Highlander, and The Bounty, featuring Mel Gibson and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Recent years saw her work on features such as The Witches, where she coached Anne Hathaway for the part of the Grand High Witch, and Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy The Favourite, where she worked with Emma Stone.

In a joint interview with the Independent in 2011, Grant recalled them meeting for the first time.

He said: ‘I met her at the Actors’ Centre in London. She was wearing a boiler suit and had fairly short, cropped hair and Kicker shoes, and was chain-smoking, which I thought was insane.

‘She was teaching an accent session with a bunch of actors, and I thought she had the most wonderful voice and huge, sort of monkey eyes. She seemed fairly frenetic. I thought that she was really cute and all that. It was December 1982.’

Nigella Lawson was the latest iconic star to be imitated on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’s Snatch Game episode and gave her verdict after giving Ella Vaday’s portrayal a watch.

The Snatch Game instalment is a highlight of the series and something fans look forward to in all the franchises.

Season three of Drag Race UK hosted the episode last week, which featured impersonations such as Gemma Collins, Amy Childs and Nigella from the queens.

Ella, who was in character as the legendary TV cook and food writer, even caught the attention of the woman herself.

All fans wanted to know was whether Nigella had seen the fabulous take on herself and it turns out, she has!

The Drag Race UK official account asked: ‘Please tell us you’ve seen @ellavaday ‘s snatch game @Nigella_Lawson. #DragRaceUK.’

Nigella soon wrote back: ‘I have and Ella was fab!’

Responding to another fan, she added: ‘I have now caught up with it and have nothing but admiration for the divine Ella! Have a great weekend, yourself!’

One other fan, who explained how ‘nervous’ she was for Ella’s take on the star, also got a response from Nigella.

The TV favourite wrote back: ‘*You* were nervous!! Imagine how I felt before watching it! But impossible not to be charmed by the fabulous Ella.’

Ella even paid homage to Nigella’s infamous ‘meecro-wah-vey’ moment during the segment, which was previously nominated for a Bafta for the must-see moment of the year.

Fans were also impressed with the take on culinary royalty with one sharing on Twitter: ‘Ella as Nigella Lawson, that’s it that’s the tweet #DragRaceUK.’

‘Ella Vaday gave me the Nigella I wanted and she should’ve won the reading challenge as well. #DragRaceUK,’ shared another.

Another commented: ‘Waiting for and then reading Nigella’s reactions to Snatch Game are the most invested I’ve ever been in Twitter #DragRaceUK.’

One fan echoed: ‘Ella Vaday as Nigella Lawson is making me feel a lot of things #DragRaceUK.’

The episode grew even more tense after the excitement of Snatch Game calmed down, with Ru sneaking a double elimination in.

Unfortunately, it was Chorizo May and River Medway who were told to ‘sashay away,’ – but who will end up becoming the UK’s next Drag Race Superstar?

Drag Race UK airs Thursdays from 7pm on BBC iPlayer.

Nigella Lawson is a woman after our own heart as she professes love for chip kebabs

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

Nigella Lawson has revealed she loves a late-night chip kebab, offering up her perfect recipe to fans whilst appearing on TV in Australia.

The much-loved cook is quite the national treasure and even received a Bafta nomination for must-see moment last year.

She went viral after warming up milk in her ‘mee-cro-wah-vay’, for a mash potato dish in 2020 in the series Cook, Eat, Repeat.

Fans became obsessed with the moment and now Nigella has shown us she’s still the most relatable TV cook as she shared her love of chip kebabs.

Currently in Australia to attend the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, she appeared on the talk show The Project to chat about all things food.

Nigella was asked by host Carrie Bickmore: ‘Nigella, are you a hot chips lady or a kebab lady?’

‘Well, I rather like a chip kebab,’ she responded, before telling viewers how to achieve perfection with theirs.

‘One of my favourites is flatbread, humous, a bit of lemon zest, chips, some lemon juice and salt and wrap it up.

‘Now, that is so good. So wonderful,’ she added.

Carrie replied: ‘Yum, I want one now,’ with Nigella joking: ‘Why haven’t you got one?!’

Nigella has been appearing on MasterChef Australia in recent years and often spends time Down Under.

She joined the eighth series of the show as a guest judge, alongside the returning judges, before returning to the show for the tenth series in 2018 and the eleventh series in 2019.

During the chat, she addressed her famous mee-cro-wah-vay moment when asked if she had any more fun words she uses around the house.

Nigella shared: ‘I have other words I use, you know how all families have those words.

‘If I get some new appliance I have to read the destructions… if I’m going to meet someone, I have to text them to say I’m en-croute.’

She revealed she ‘wasn’t even aware I’d said that out loud’ and explained: ‘I would say that at home, when I did it, it’s just a joke, mispronouncing words.

‘You can end up speaking in a language that is a bit of a bonkers side!

‘That was filmed in a brief window in lockdown so I can’t be held accountable for the state of my mind then,’ Nigella laughed.

Annie Mac’s unusual pronunciation of ‘kneading’ on Celebrity Bake Off is nothing short of iconic

Annie Mac revealed her obscure pronunciation of the word ‘kneading’ during Celebrity Bake Off on Tuesday night and we’ll never say it the same way again.

The DJ and podcaster, who was among the stars competing in the Stand Up To Cancer charity special, joined the likes of Ed Gamble, Example, and Matt Lucas in the tent.

For the technical challenge, the contestants were tasked with making six identical raspberry doughnuts, and Annie was keen to hammer her dough by ‘nedding’ it.

Yes, it looks like Nigella Lawson’s ‘microwavé’ has competition!

‘Maybe I should do a bit more nedding,’ Annie said. Talking viewers through the process, she continued: ‘You’re trying to get more air into it, so it’s less dense.

‘The only way you do that is by nedding it.’

Presenter Noel Fielding was rather amused by Annie’s unique take on the word and confronted her about it.

‘Word on the street is that instead of kneading dough you keep saying “nedding” dough,’ he said.

‘Just because I don’t know the baking lingo!’ Annie retorted.

‘In my opinion, it’s an upgrade,’ Noel replied. ‘Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.’

It’s safe to say viewers were a little stunned by Annie’s pronounciation, with one writing:  ‘Wait, Annie Mac pronounces “kneading” nedding?’

Others, however, were quick to share gifs of The Simpsons character Ned Flounders.

Each year, The Great Celebrity Stand Up To Cancer sees a host of celebrity bakers head to the tent, in an attempt to raise some money and cause some chaos in the kitchen.

This year’s crop of 19 celebrities includes Sir Mo Farah, singer Ellie Goulding and Strictly Come Dancing judge Motsi Mabuse.

Other stars putting their baking skills to the test include comedian and creator of Taskmaster Alex Horne, TV presenter Emma Willis, and choirmaster Gareth Malone.

Also hoping to impress the judges are actor and author Ben Miller, The Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison, and TV and radio presenter Clara Amfo.

Former Coronation Street actress Katherine Kelly, TV presenter Laura Whitmore, writer and comedian Mawaan Rizwan, TV star Ruby Wax, TV presenter Sophie Morgan, Friday Night Dinner’s Tracy-Ann Oberman and musician Yung Filly complete the line-up.

Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer 2022 returns Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.

Nigella Lawson throws her hat in the ring to host Eurovision 2023 – and we are so here for this

Celebrity cook and all-round hun Nigella Lawson has told fans she would love to host Eurovision if it does indeed come to the UK next year.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) yesterday announced that the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest will not be held in Ukraine after Kalush Orchestra’s win last month.

In a statement, they explained that options were explored to try and make the contest happen in Ukraine, amid the Russian invasion, but that it would not be possible to make it work.

Due to the UK act Sam Ryder finishing as runner-up, the nation is now looking the most likely to take over hosting duties, with the EBU revealing they would be starting discussions with the BBC.

This means avid viewers are already listing the names they’d love to see in the presenting team, with Rylan Clark, AJ Odudu and Scott Mills among those already put forward.

But in response to a tweet sharing the news that the UK could host next year, cook Nigella teased she could be the next Katie Boyle.

Katie was a TV star and actress who presented the Eurovision Song Contest on four occasions, in 1960, 1963, 1968 and 1974.

Nigella wrote: ‘Waiting for my Katie Boyle moment! Why else get a languages degree?’

Of course, fans quickly backed Nigella and pleaded with the BBC to make it happen.

One wrote on Twitter: ‘Oh yes, you would be absolutely perfect 🤩.’

‘Make. It. Happen. Please @Nigella_Lawson and @BBCBreaking,’ said another.

Someone else commented: ‘Oh my god – this would be HEAVEN! The glorious Nigella hosting Eurovision! I’m still overwhelmed at your quadrilingual points cameo in 2015.’

Another fan shared: ‘@bbceurovision NIGELLA FOR PRESENTING TEAM 100%.’

Nigella famously brought the results of the UK vote to the continent during the 2015 contest, which was hosted in Vienna, Austria.

The top scorer from the UK that year was the wonderful eventual winner from Sweden, Mans Zelmerlow.

While Eurovision fanatics are understandably, already very excited, the BBC issued a statement in response to the announcement, making it clear discussions are still yet to start.

‘We have seen the announcement from the EBU. Clearly, these aren’t a set of circumstances that anyone would want.

‘Following their decision, we will of course discuss the BBC hosting the Eurovision Song Contest,’ the broadcaster said.

Nigella Lawson lashes out at ‘mean’ cooking shows: ‘A theatre of cruelty and humiliation’

Nigella Lawson has slammed the treatment of aspiring cooks on ‘mean’ programmes, labelling them ‘a theatre of cruelty and humiliation.’

The television chef shut down the possibility of ever appearing in a cooking show that doesn’t prioritise respect among its contestants and crew.

Speaking to Australian Woman’s Weekly about explosive culinary series, the 62-year-old said: ‘I don’t like that at all. I think it’s counterproductive.

‘It makes people at home feel inhibited about cooking too, because they have this persecutory voice in their heads. I couldn’t be part of a programme like that.

‘It doesn’t mean to say you’re not honest, but there’s never a need to be mean.’

Hit series such as Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares have gained a reputation for featuring explosive insults – and lots of shouting.

Some of his insults on his shows include asking a chef if they were ‘stupid’ and telling one, ‘you’re so in denial you need therapy.’

Gordon even parodied himself with James Corden in a skit on The Late Late show where he slapped two pieces of bread around talkshow host Julie Chen’s head and called her an ‘idiot sandwich.’

While Nigella might not be screaming the F-bomb in a fit of rage any time soon on national television, there is another starry job that would take her fancy.

If the UK does indeed host Eurovision in 2023, Nigella teased she would love to present the iconic singing competition.

One wrote on Twitter: ‘Oh yes, you would be absolutely perfect.’

Eurovision dreams aside, Nigella has been spending a lot of time Down Under, having been revealed as a new judge on Aussie show My Kitchen Rules in April.

She’s also appeared multiple times on MasterChef Australia, with the series of Oz gigs making her friends joke about her becoming a ‘regular Aussie commuter.’

Nigella Lawson reveals why she simply cannot use chopsticks

Nigella Lawson may be the Queen of cooking, but that doesn’t mean she knows her way around every kitchen utensil.

Last week, the national treasure was exposed by her My Kitchen Rules co-star Manu Feildel when he revealed she doesn’t know how to use chopsticks.

During a dinner, the cooks were about to tuck into some delicious food but the 62-year-old confessed she was going to struggle to take her first bite as she was incapable of using the cutlery.

Manu, 48, found the whole scenario ‘hilarious’ as he recounted the saga on News.com.au’s podcast I’ve Got News For You.

And the How to Be a Domestic Goddess writer has been totally honest about her lack of chopstick prowess, opening up about the real reason why she has difficulty eating with them.

It turns out the TV chef is ‘completely uncoordinated’ and finds chopsticks ‘particularly hard’ because she’s double-jointed.

‘I’m very incompetent,’ she joked on a video shared on Manu’s Instagram.

Nigella clearly enjoyed the candid chat, commenting on the post: ‘Manu, I could sit on that sofa talking with you forever! And thank you all for such lovely comments.’

Aside from cooking, the Simply Nigella presenter has shared her secret ambition to host the Eurovision Song Contest when it comes to the UK next year.

Nigella Lawson, who is a good friend of Salman Rushdie, has told fans she is ‘distraught’ after the author was attacked ahead of giving a lecture in New York.

Rushdie, 75, was reportedly stabbed in the neck while sitting on stage just as he was about to give a speech.

Multiple stars, including fellow literary greats, have flooded social media with their prayers and well-wishes after he was taken to hospital.

Lawson, who has been a close friend of the Satanic Verses author since she was 23, is amongst the stars to have reacted after he was attacked on stage in New York.

The cookery icon penned: ‘Such shocking news of Salman Rushdie having been stabbed. This is horrific. Am distraught.

‘Please, please let him be ok,’ she added, before being inundated with support from her 2.7million followers.

Journalist and author of Empireland, Sathnam Sanghera, tweeted: ‘Passage from Midnight’s Children in my last ever exam. Poster of The Moor’s Last Sigh had place on my (pretentious) student bedroom wall. Quote from Satanic Verses opens Empireland.

‘Lots of British Asian writers wouldn’t be writers without him. Pray he’s well.’

The incident happened at the Chautauqua Institution, about 55 miles southwest of Buffalo in a rural corner of New York, which hosts a summer lecture series.

The interviewer suffered a ‘minor head injury’ and a New York state trooper ‘assigned to the event immediately took the suspect into custody’.

While the attacker’s motive remains unclear at this stage, the author has been a target since his book The Satanic Verses was released in 1988.

The work, which was partly influenced by the life of Mohammed, was attacked by authoritarian Muslim leaders, most notably the Iranian ayatollah, and is banned in Iran.

Nigella Lawson wants you to add peanut butter to your pasta in this budget-friendly recipe

Peanut butter and pasta?

It might sound a bit odd, we know, but if there’s anyone whose food combinations we trust, it’s Nigella Lawson.

The chef has just revealed a budget-friendly recipe for her ‘dreamy, creamy’ peanut butter pasta as part of a new partnership with Ocado, featuring four new recipes and a ‘Nigella Loves’ edit of her favourite products.

All the recipes Nigella has come up with for the collab are designed to feed a family of four for under £1.25 per person, showing you don’t have to spend a load of cash for a tasty dinner.

You can find out how to make a Nigella-approved stir fry, a black bean and cous cous dish, and a speedy steamed sponge, over on the Ocado website (with more meals to come throughout the year), but to get you started, we’ve got the most controversial dinner of the bunch right here.

Italians, you might want to look away. Or, be brave, rummage in your kitchen cupboards, and get cooking. You could just find your new favourite midweek meal.

Nigella’s creamy, dreamy peanut butter pasta recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 240g pack baby spinach
  • 1 tbsp fine salt, plus ¼ tsp for the sauce
  • 320g spaghetti
  • 75g smooth peanut butter
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp chilli flakes
  • ½ unwaxed lemon, juiced, plus wedges to serve
  • 1 large pinch of paprika, for dusting (optional)
nigella lawson peanut butter pasta
Give it a go (Picture: Nigella Lawson/Ocado)

Method:

  1. Get out a large pan that comes with a tightly fitting lid, and fill it with 2.5L water from a just-boiled kettle. Clamp on the lid, and bring the water back to the boil on a large burner on your hob. Sit a large colander in the sink, break open your bag of baby spinach leaves with gusto and tip the contents into the waiting colander.
  2. Get out a clean tea towel (not a terry towelling or waffle one, just a smooth, thin one) and take it over to the stove. Once the water’s boiling vigorously, add 1tbsp fine salt, which will make the water rise up fizzingly. Wait for it to subside, then give it a good stir and, once the water’s boiling again, add the pasta, and stir with a pasta fork to help it submerge. Once the water has come back to the boil, cook for 2 mins, stirring often to detangle and declump the spaghetti. Once the 2 mins are up, take the pan off the heat – though just to a neighbouring burner – cover with your tea towel and clamp on the lid for 8 mins, during which you can prepare your remaining ingredients.
  3. Remove the lid and tea towel, give the spaghetti a good old stir, then scoop out 500ml of the starchy pasta cooking liquid with a jug or mug: it’s this that makes the sauce so luxuriously creamy. If you taste a strand of pasta, you should find it’s almost properly cooked, but still has a tiny bit of bite to it.
  4. Drain the pasta into the spinach-filled colander – thereby wilting the leaves – and take the pan back to the hob, leaving the colander in the sink for now. Quickly spoon the peanut butter into the warm pan and add about 125ml of the reserved pasta cooking water and stir well. It will look grainy and alarming at first, and when you look at the curdled clumps, you’ll think something’s gone wrong. It hasn’t! Just carry on stirring, adding the minced garlic, dried thyme, chilli flakes, 2 tsp lemon juice and ¼ tsp salt, and you will swiftly see a pale, herb-flecked emulsion come into being. Slowly stir in another 125ml of the pasta water until that too has been smoothly incorporated.
  5. Add the spag‘n’spinach and stir and toss in the pan (I use a couple of forks) to mix everything together as evenly as possible. You’ll need to keep adding more of the reserved pasta water, as the pasta will keep drinking it up, so keep adding a little at a time, stirring vigorously but carefully; you shouldn’t have more than 50ml left, though you might well use it all. Taste for seasoning – you may need more salt or lemon juice – then serve, making sure you give everyone an even amount of spinach. If wished, lightly dust the top of each bowl with paprika. And if you have half a lemon left over, you could slice it into thin wedges and give one to each person to squeeze as they eat.

While I find it unlikely that it won’t all be gobbled, any leftovers make for a wonderful cold noodly lunch the next day, when I like to spritz it with a little extra lemon juice and sprinkle over a few more chilli flakes.

Nigella Lawson has been spotted walking arm in arm with entrepreneur, Alex Fane.

The pair were pictured sharing a roadside picnic together and walked arm in arm in casual outfits back to her car.

Dressed down in a navy gilet, white T-shirt and trainers, events and production mogul Alex pulled the TV chef in close as they shared a giggle.

Eating sandwiches on a quaint picnic table, Nigella looked radiant in a polka dot maxi-dress, black shades and cross-body bag.

Celebrity chef and ‘mee-cro-wah-vay’ queen Nigella, 62, shares two children; Cosima Thomasina, 26, and Bruno Paul, 24, from her relationship with first husband John Diamond.

The couple were married for nine years after tying the knot in Venice in 1992.

Two years after her first husband’s death, Nigella married art collector Charles Saatchi in September 2003.

Married for 10 years, the famous relationship was renowned for being tumultuous and ended in an extremely public divorce in 2013.

The famous foodie is currently on a 16-city US tour to promote her new book Cook, Eat, Repeat: Ingredients, Recipes and Stories.

Her 12th cookbook landed on US shelves in April 2021 and now she is showing up in person to deliver ‘the rhythms and rituals of life spent in the kitchen.’

TV chef Angela Hartnett on being yelled at by Gordan Ramsay and her Italian version of Christmas dinner.

With both you and your husband being chefs, is it cordon bleu cooking every night at yours?

We’re not having three-course meals every night! That’s the day job. Some nights we might just have a bit of cheese on toast and other nights we might just have a bowl of soup.

Most of the time we’re working in restaurants anyway but whoever is home first is generally the one who does the cooking.

Who are your personal favourite chefs?

I love Delia Smith, Nigel Slater, Nigella Lawson, Rick Stein and Keith Floyd but if I’m honest I don’t really watch many TV shows about cooking. It’s a bit of a busman’s holiday, isn’t it? I’d much rather go out or watch a good comedy. I love Ted Lasso.

Where did you train as a chef?

Nigella Lawson is one of Angela's favourite chefs

I didn’t. I never went to cookery college, I did a history degree. After that I learnt on jobs, working in kitchens. I worked for Gordon Ramsay for a long time.

What’s it like to be on the wrong side of one of his famous rollockings?

Nobody wants to be shouted at but you can understand why he’s doing it. He’s got a job to do and he wants to do it well. I worked with Gordon for 17 years. You wouldn’t work with someone for that long if they were an awful person. He just demands excellence!

It’s as if you’re inviting people round for food and a nice chat. I mainly do the cooking and Nick Grimshaw mainly does the chat and serves the drinks. Season two guests included Vernon Kay, Nadiya Hussain and Stanley Tucci. I did a wild mushroom tagliatelle for Martin Kemp, which was nice. I describe what I’m cooking for listeners and we send a link to the recipes.

Do you have any cooking traditions in your family?

Mum’s family are Italian… at Christmas we make a Sicilian pasta dish called anellini. At Easter we do a delicious tortelli of spinach and ricotta. I’m lucky that all my aunts and cousins are great cooks so we all help prepare them together. I make the broth and it’s become a tradition.

Do you still cook daily?

Yes. I’ve got four restaurants altogether, all in London, but I base myself at Murano. They’re basically self-sufficient and I just go when I need to.

It’s actually been two years since Nigella Lawson’s ‘mee-cro-wah-vay’ moment, and it’s still iconic

We can’t quite believe that it’s been two years since Nigella Lawson wowed us with her personal pronunciation of microwave.

In an episode of her BBC series, titled Cook, Eat, Repeat, the 62-year-old se poured some milk into a pan after warming it up in the ‘meeecro-wa-vay’.

Although some people found themselves pressing the rewind button to make sure they heard correctly, viewers were absolutely living for Nigella’s delivery and vowed they would pronounce the everyday appliance in the same way.

And I’m sure the TV chef would be thrilled to know that fans are still talking about the golden moment to this day.

Celebrating the viral meme’s anniversary on Twitter, one person wrote: ‘Still one of the most loveliest pre-Christmas TV moments. I saw it unfold in front of me. Memories I’ll cherish for years to come.’

’Happy meecrowavay day to all who celebrate xoxo,’ another added.

‘Endless entertainment. Forever thankful for @Nigella_Lawson,’ a third tweeted.

Educational language app Duolingo also weighed in: ‘two years since the english language changed for the better x.’

We couldn’t agree more!

At the time Nigella had to address the remark made after fans genuinely thought that’s how the word was pronounced.

When one fan tweeted: ‘Am I the only one who thought @Nigella_Lawson was being sarcastic when she pronounced Meecro-wavé?!

‘Now, I’m starting to think she really pronounces it like that?’

Nigella replied: ‘Well, I do say it like that, but not because I think that’s how it’s actually pronounced.’

Her pronunciation even landed her Bafta nomination in 2021 for Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment – but the gong went to dance group Diversity’s Black Lives Matter routine.

Nevertheless, it looks like microwave is out and ‘mee-cro-wah-vay’ is here to stay!

Nigella Lawson recommends ditching one part of Christmas dinner and it’s definitely divisive

When it comes to Christmas dinner, Nigella Lawson is pretty much the Queen – but her opinions on what you should ditch are sure to divide opinion.

Every year there’s a debate over the best part of Christmas dinner – is it the roast potatoes? The turkey? Perhaps the Yorkshire puddings?

But now, TV cook Nigella, 62, has thoughts on starters. In fact, she doesn’t believe they’re necessary at all.

Chatting about ‘obscene overindulgence’ over Christmas, the food writer advised people against eating too much to avoid becoming ‘a bloated wreck.’

She told The News Agents podcast hosts Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel: ‘I don’t know why people do starters for Christmas lunch. I never have, that seems a madness.’

Nigella continued: ‘But I also think there is a way in which for many people it does become a sort of obscene overindulgence.

‘So, people are not eating because it is pleasurable. They’re eating because somehow people feel it is when they should be eating non-stop and picking at things non-stop.’

When Jon asked, ‘We’re talking greed and gluttony here?’, she responded: ‘Yes, but they can go too far to, when you want to feel full-up and grateful that you feel full up, but you don’t want to be a bloated wreck.’

So, what do we think, starters or no starters?

Elsewhere on the podcast, Nigella revealed she won’t be giving gifts this year and instead will donate to charity.

She told Emily and Jon that she’s ‘not interested’ in gifting presents to ‘people who don’t need things.’

‘Celebrating food with your family is something we all, if we can do, should do it and do it gratefully. But I certainly feel I am not interested in this year buying people who don’t need things presents.’

Nigella recommended gifting loved ones with a card to say you have ‘donated in your name in lieu of a Christmas present’, rather than shopping unnecessarily.

This way, it allows people to ‘feel like you’re still doing something.’

‘You want to celebrate being with your family in ways that we haven’t been able to, but you don’t want it to tip into the obscene.’

Nigella Lawson ‘leaves Australian cooking competition My Kitchen Rules after just one season’

Nigella Lawson has reportedly left Australian cooking show My Kitchen Rules after just one season.

The television chef is said to not be returning to her Aussie kitchen when the programme’s newest season launches on Channel 7 later this year.

According to the Herald Sun, Nigella has left after just one season after co-hosting the programme.

The cooking competition, which first aired in 2010, is judged by the likes of Manu Feildel and Matt Preston, with Nigella taking over from Pete Evans after his departure following series 11.

Nigella had originally been by Manu’s side at the start of the series, stepping aside for Matt when he took over for the remaining episodes.

Gary Mehigan and Colin Fassnidge also joined as guest judges.

The publication reports that Colin and Manu are definitely returning for the new series, although it has yet to be announced who will be replacing Nigella.

This comes after she lashed out at ‘mean’ cooking shows, calling them ‘a theatre of cruelty and humiliation’.

Ahead of My Kitchen Rules airing last summer, Nigella shut down the possibility of ever appearing in a cooking show that doesn’t prioritise respect among its contestants and crew.

Metro.co.uk has approached Nigella’s reps for comment.

The ‘Passive Cooking’ pasta technique that Nigella swears by could save you money

Given the cost of living crisis, we are all more conscious of the energy we are using in our homes.

And now, people are sharing a handy hack to reduce the time (and energy) it takes to cook pasta.

The ‘passive cooking’ technique involves boiling pasta for just two minutes, then turning the stove off and leaving it in the pot covered, until fully cooked.

Cooking your dinner this way can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% compared to cooking your pasta the regular way, according to pasta brand Barilla.

When you consider the fact that about 400 million portions of pasta are served every day, that’s a big cut in emissions.

Not convinced? If it’s good enough for chef Nigella Lawson, it’s good enough for us.

Boil it for two minutes then simply leave it covered

On her website, cooking guru Nigella says she always uses this technique – which she calls the Vincenzo Agnesi method – to cook pasta.

‘Bring your water to the boil, add salt, then tip in the pasta, stirring well to make sure it’s all in and not clumped together. Once the water comes back to the boil, let the pasta cook for 2 minutes, then turn off the heat, cover the pan with a clean, thin tea towel (not a waffle-textured one) and clamp on a tight-fitting lid,’ she says.

‘Let the pasta stand like this for as long as the packet tells you to cook it normally. When the time is up, drain the pasta, remembering to remove a small cupful of cooking water before doing so.’

Of course, timings vary for different types of pasta, but Barilla has shared a handy graphic detailing how long you should leave your pasta to sit after boiling.

Spaghetti traditionally takes nine minutes to cook. When using the passive cooking technique it should be boiled for two minutes and left in the water covered for another eight, the brand says.

This will come in handy for when you’re making the family favourite, spag bol.

Fusilli takes slightly longer at 11 minutes, so boil it for two and then leave it covered for another 10.

If it's good enough for Nigella then it's good enough for us
If it’s good enough for Nigella then it’s good enough for us (picture: Barilla)

This is exactly the same for penne rigate.

Tortiglioni usually takes 12 minutes, so boil it for two and then leave it covered for another 12.

Maccheroni is the quickest pasta to cook with a time of just seven minutes. So boil it for two and leave it covered for six minutes.

Farfalle takes an average of 10 minutes so boil it for two and then leave it covered for another 10.

Then voila, you’ve saved money and got a very yummy meal at the end of it. What’s not to love?

You could even give this technique a go with this delicious smoked chilli and vodka pasta recipe.

Nigella Lawson has spoken for the first time since her father Nigel Lawson’s death aged 91.

The former chancellor, who served in Margaret Thatcher’s Cabinet in the 1980, died on Monday (April 3), prompting a flood of tributes from politicians including prime minster Rishi Sunak.

On Twitter on Tuesday, the TV chef, 63, broke her silence following the news of the former MP for Blaby’s death, thanking her followers for their support.

She wrote: ‘Thank you for all your kind messages. And I’ll be back on here properly tomorrow.’

Her followers were quick to share their condolences, with one writing: ‘So sorry for your loss Nigella. Take care and take time for yourself.’

‘Take time. Go steadily. And know you are supported by so much love,’ a fan shared, while another told the Nigellissima star to ‘take as much time as you need.’

A fourth sympathised: ‘So sorry for your loss Nigella, I lost my dad very recently so I know how you must be feeling.’

The My Kitchen Rules judge was one of Lord Lawson’s six children and one of four he had with her late mother Vanessa Salmon.

The Domestic Goddess previously told Metro.co.uk that, despite her father’s career, politics wasn’t a common topic for conversation among her family.

She said: ‘I had absolutely no politics at all when I was at Oxford – I just worked and had fun. My father would never expect me to agree with him about anything in particular [laughs].

‘And, to be honest, we never talk about politics much. I’ve never been all that political in any serious sense. I have seen enough of politics to know that I have absolutely no desire to get mixed up in that kind of life.

Paying tribute to Lawson on Twitter, Sunak said the party grandee ‘was a transformational chancellor and an inspiration to me and many others’ as he paid tribute on Twitter.

Former PM, Boris Johnson paid tribute and said: ‘Nigel Lawson was a fearless and original flame of free market Conservatism.

‘He was a tax-cutter and simplifier who helped transform the economic landscape and helped millions of British people achieve their dreams.

‘He was a prophet of Brexit and a lover of continental Europe. He was a giant. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.’

Best known for his role as chancellor, Lawson retired from the House of Lords in December, ending a parliamentary career stretching back nearly five decades.

In a statement shared with Metro.co.uk, the force said: ‘Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of a man in Carlton.

Zonfrillo’s family had earlier confirmed his death in a statement that said: ‘With completely shattered hearts and without knowing how we can possibly move through life without him, we are devastated to share that Jock passed away yesterday.’

They added: ‘So many words can describe him, so many stories can be told, but at this time we’re too overwhelmed to put them into words.

Munya Chawawa's Nigella Lawson spoof wins the coronation coverage.
Nigella Lawson (Munya Chawawa) has shared a recipe to celebrate the coronation (Picture: Munya Chawawa)

Forget the coronation quiche, Munya Chawawa’s Nigella Lawson inspired trifle is the dish everyone will want to get on their lips this weekend.

The comedian made his name for parody sketches during the pandemic, and clearly couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get involved in the historic event.

After taking on the domestic goddess in skits before, Munya decided to give it another go when putting together a delectable dessert that could very nearly have been created by Nigella.

In the one-minute video shared to social media, Munya took some creative licence when it came to Nigella’s style, opting wear a tight crop top and trackpants, as well as a tea towel over his head, which was either an interesting choice of accessory or a nod to her flowing locks.

As the video began, Nigella (Munya) was preoccupied looking at some shirtless photos of the young king and was a bit caught off guard when realising she was being watched.

Ever the consummate professional though, she quickly pivoted and put her focus into sharing her carefully crafted recipe.

The ‘Terrific Trifle’ to celebrate the coronation (which was slightly mispronounced in the same vein as microwave) was a saucy affair as Nigella explained that it must begin with a ‘sumptuous symphony of sponge fingers’.

While she explained they could be put on top, she explained that she found people ‘always respond well to a surprise finger in the bottom’ too.

The next ingredients on the list were a ‘princely punnet of strawberries’ and then a ‘jubilant jug of jelly’.

At the same time as running through the recipe, some helpful subtitles suggested Nigella was ‘flirting in five a day’ and ‘defrosting [jelly] sexually’.

Finishing it all up, she said that people often debated which layer should go last.

The devilish dessert was promised to ‘even make his majesty come…to your street party’.

In the past Munya has played Nigella several times, which has included sharing her summer smoothie to get through the heatwave, as well as her apparent go-to Christmas dinner.

But while his skits have picked up plenty of fans, Munya also recently hit the small screen after playing King Charles recently.

Earlier this year Munya played him in Prince Andrew: The Musical, a casting choice he joked might have got royalists up in arms.

‘If people are angry about Meghan and Harry doing a documentary…,’ he teased when he was announced as part of the line-up.

Gordon Ramsay brought to tears over Jock Zonfrillo in special programme paying tribute to late MasterChef Australia judge

A special programme has aired in honour of late MasterChef Australia judge Jock Zonfrillo following his death aged 46.

Celebrity chefs including Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson and Marco Pierre White took part to pay tribute to him, with Gordon Ramsay being brought to tears as he remembered the beloved star.

Last week, Zonfrillo’s family released a statement describing their devastation over his shocking death, stating: ‘With completely shattered hearts and without knowing how we can possibly move through life without him, we are devastated to share that Jock passed away yesterday.’

Police confirmed that his death was not being treated as suspicious, while Channel Ten in Australia postponed the premiere of the new season of MasterChef Australia as tributes poured in for the TV personality.

On Sunday, a special episode of Australian TV programme The Project was released, in which several notable figures within the culinary entertainment industry paid homage to Zonfrillo’s memory.

Ramsay, 56, described Zonfrillo’s death as a ‘massive shock’, before wiping away tears.

‘He was never done as a chef, he still had years to go,’ the Hell’s Kitchen star said, adding that spending time with his late friend on MasterChef had been ‘electrifying’.

‘Being in the environment together sort of took us back 20 years, there is something quite amazing about two Scots coming together in Australia, it makes you happy at the end of the day’ he said.

Ramsay added that there was ‘always something quite encouraging’ about everything that they’d been through ‘to get to where we’d been’.

Oliver, 47, remembered meeting Zonfrillo for the first time when he and his wife Jools Oliver went on a date at the very beginning of their relationship.

‘It was me and Jools’ first date weekend and we went there, and there he was, young Jock, 22-years-old, head chef with a beautiful menu and beautiful food,’ recalled.

‘I remember it because it was the first time I remember being spoiled by another chef. We’ve lost a very, very bright star.’

Lawson, 63, said that her ‘heart breaks’ for Zonfrllo’s children and family, as well as ‘everyone who loved him’.

‘There’s an old fashioned phrase here but may his memory be a blessing,’ she added.

White, 61, remembered Zonfrillo coming to him when he was 17 years old, recollecting how ‘his enthusiasm was greater than his knowledge’

‘But it was that enthusiasm which drove him, maybe fuelled by his fears of failure, by his insecurities, which I could relate to,’ he continued.

‘Very few chefs have an inquisitive mind, an intellectual mind and a creative mind. Originality is only original if you’re the first and Jock was the first at what he did, and people have followed him. That’s what makes him special, that’s what makes him rare.’

Jason Momoa slammed for ‘rude’ treatment of Nigella Lawson on live TV

Jason Momoa left viewers less than impressed over what was perceived as his ‘rudeness’ to Nigella Lawson.

The Hollywood star appeared on Monday night’s episode of The One Show to speak about the upcoming Aquaman 2.

He was joined on the sofa by Northern Ireland actor James Nesbitt and celebrity chef Nigella – however viewers were left fuming as they slammed his ‘bad manners’ towards the food writer.

As James chatted about his own upcoming project, Jason, who was sitting in the middle, leaned in to him and completely turned his back on Nigella.

Fans were quick to take to Twitter, aka X, to slam the behaviour, with one user, Lady Eileena, writing ‘how bad mannered … turning his back on Nigella, cutting her out of the conversation.’

User Chris noted the ‘awkward body language as Jason Momoa turns his back on Nigella… what’s that all about?’

Stephen Havard shared a screenshot from the episode and asked ‘what’s Nigella done to upset Jason Momoa then?’

‘Very rude body language by Jason Momoa, putting his back to Nigella,’ Ronan Lewis agreed, with Elizabeth Scott complaining ‘this Jason bloke is rude sitting with his back to Nigella.’

And as one user put it: ‘Why is Jason Momoa pointedly sitting with his back to Nigella Lawson?’

It comes ahead of the release of Aquaman And The Lsot Kingdom, which sees Jason taking centre stage in his role as the titular superhero alongside Nicole Kidman as Atlanna and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta.

Aquaman 2 follows Black Manta as he unleashes an ancient and malevolent force after failing to defeat Aquaman, who in turn forges an unlikely alliance with his brother Orm, the former king of Atlantis to save the world from destruction.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set for release on December 22.

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
