Nigella Lawson’s favourite mince pie side dish is going to divide households

Mince pies on a board
While it may sound unusual to some, it’s actually a long held tradition up north (Picture: Kinga Krzeminska)

If you’re eating your Christmas dessert with just a cup of tea for company, you’re doing it wrong — that is, according to the culinary queen herself, Nigella Lawson.

While there’s nothing quite like tucking into a huge slice of Christmas cake or a homemade mince pie a couple of hours after Christmas dinner, Nigella believes that half the country is going wrong by not pairing these traditional puddings with a certain side dish: a slice of cheese.

Speaking on The One Show, she told host Jermaine Jenas that there is a ‘bit of a north-south divide’ when it comes to eating Christmas cake with cheese, which is a long held tradition up in Yorkshire

‘Even though I am a soft southerner, I am very much with the north on this,’ she said.

Over on X (formerly Twitter), Nigella confirmed that the same “absolutely” goes for mince pies too.

On which cheese is the best accompaniment, Nigella told The One Show that ‘tangy’ cheeses like Wensleydale or Lancashire made for the best pairings.

Nigella Lawson’s easy, no-fuss Christmas cake recipe

Fancy making your own Christmas cake this year? Nigella shared an easy recipe on her website.

What you’ll need:

  • 775 grams best-quality mixed dried fruit
  • 175 grams unsalted butter
  • 250 grams dark brown muscovado sugar
  • 1 x 250 grams tin sweetened chestnut puree
  • 125 millilitres dark rum
  • juice and zest of 1 orange
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • 3 large eggs (beaten)
  • 250 grams plain flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 2/150°C/130°C Fan/300°F (though you might prefer to do this after the fruits and so forth have started bubbling in their pan).
  2. Line the sides and bottom of a deep 20cm / 8-inch round cake tin with a double layer of greaseproof paper (parchment paper). The greaseproof should be higher than the sides of the tin.
  3. Wrap a double layer of brown paper (the kind used for parcels) around the outside of the tin, tying it with string. The paper should be double the height of the tin, and this gives an extra layer of insulation for the cake so that it cooks slowly. If you don’t have any brown paper, it is not absolutely necessary, but it will keep the cake from becoming too dark around the sides and top.
  4. Put the dried fruit, butter, sugar, chestnut purée or spread, rum and orange juice and zests into a large wide saucepan and bring to the boil gently, stirring as the butter melts. Simmer the mixture for 10 minutes, and then take it off the heat and leave to stand for 30 minutes, by which time the fruits will have been soused and the mixture cooled slightly.
  5. Now, add the beaten eggs, flour, baking powder and spices and stir to combine.
  6. Pour the fruit cake mixture very carefully into the prepared cake tin.
  7. Place in the oven and bake for 1¾–2 hours, by which time the top of the cake should be firm and dry and will have cracked a little. If you insert a cake tester into the middle of the cake it will still come out a little sticky.
  8. Put the cake on a cooling rack and take off the brown paper from around the outside of the tin. It will hold its heat and take a long while to cool, but once it has cooled completely, unmould it from the tin and wrap the cake well in a layer of greaseproof paper and then foil until you want to decorate it.
  9. The cake will keep for a couple of months well wrapped and in a cool dark place. If you want a more boozy offering you can feed the cake with 3 tablespoons more rum as soon as it gets out of the oven. That’s to say, pierce the top of the cake several times with a fine skewer, spoon over the rum and let it sink in.

‘You want something sharp and crumbly,’ she said.

And Yorkshire folk online have confirmed that this is indeed a winning combination and in fact, not much of a revelation, with user Ruth Maxwell-Hudson saying it’s been ‘normal forever’.

‘The people of Yorkshire are responsible for many great things, but none greater than this,’ added Doulgas Hardie.

‘Christmas cake and Wensleydale,’ said Sarah Tyler. ‘A compulsory combination for me, it’s gorgeous.’

But, not everyone is on board. ‘Not convinced,’ wrote Gareth Douce.

‘Nope why ruin a nice Christmas cake with cheese,’ wrote Elaine James.

Nigella Lawson casually dropping in her Drag Queen name while rolling out some pastry dough has well and truly got the festive season going.

The celebrity chef, 63, has gifted us with some pretty memorable moments in TV history – who will ever forget ‘mee-cro-wah-vay’?

And this year’s Christmas special proved to be just as iconic.

Nigella took BBC viewers to Amsterdam for the special episode, which saw her shaking cocktails, cheese tasting and baking Speculaas.

Along the way, she delivered her classic one-liners and innuendos, including demonstrating her ‘very useful nut bashing bag’.

Elsewhere, as she rolled out the Speculaas dough, she mentioned her drag queen name.

And it’s sent the internet wild.

‘My Speculaas dough has rested, as have I, so before I roll it out, I’m going to give this slab a bit of a dusting with my magic wand, or perhaps it’s a bit more of a seasonal sceptre,’ she began.

Opening out the dough, she then said: ‘Let’s unwrap this fat patty – my Drag name.’

‘Boy I love @Nigella_Lawson I want one of those flour dusting wands and her rolling out the dough “my drag name #fatpatty” she’s defo an ally – LOVE HER,’ viewers @steviewhitehead wrote.

‘”Fat patty… my drag name” – comedy genius from @Nigella_Lawson,’ @Chauders0117 agreed.

‘OMG, I’m crying with laughter at what you just said “fat patty”, my drag name hahaha,’ @Lamplight69 said.

Another viewer @itskeithriley echoed: ‘”Fat patty, my drag name” – @Nigella_Lawson is utterly joyful.’

Meanwhile, others were left questioning where to buy Nigella’s ‘magic wand’, after seeing her use it dust flour, while others couldn’t ignore the innuendo.

One viewer @mikedgratton wrote on X: ‘@Nigella_Lawson loves her magic wand eh…? It’s almost a Mickrowarve moment!’

@ashleyking1985 added: ‘Just turned the TV onto BBC1 to Nigella talking about baking parchment and how she loves her ‘magic wand’.’

‘There she goes!’ Nigella Lawson’s filthy innuendoes from Christmas special are something else

Nigella Lawson has left viewers ‘screaming’ during her latest Christmas special with her incredibly filthy innuendos.

The TV chef, 63, travelled to Amsterdam to enjoy the festive season in the city, visiting her favourite places before picking up special ingredients to make traditional dishes.

But, as always, her sultry presenting style and cheeky comments left many slightly distracted.

When making her No-Bake Advocaat and Ginger Cake, Nigella said she had some macadamias ready to go for the recipe in what she dubbed her ‘nut-bashing bag’.

Simply putting the nuts into a zip-lock bag, Nigella took a rolling pin and started smashing the nuts as she said: ‘Bash, bash, very useful!’

Not missing her chance, she looked up at the camera, smiled, and declared: ‘We all need an outlet for Christmas.’

People watching on at home were understandably obsessed.

‘“I have some macadamias in my nut bashing bag” – I am screaming. Go on Nigella,’ one person posted on X.

‘And the double entendres continue lol,’ someone else shared.

Another added: ‘My husband and son are enjoying naughty Nigella especially with her nut bashing bag.’

At different points in the special, fans went wild with other comments, including when Nigella insisted on visiting a sweet shop because ‘my liquorice box needs a restock’.

‘The toolbox full of liquorice has fully sent me over the edge, I can’t stop laughing,’ someone explained.

The blanket bars.

Even just seeing one of her dishes was an eye-opening experience for some, with Nigella’s blanket bars (almond paste encased in puff pastry) needing some extra work after coming out of the oven.

‘You’ll see that some of the paste has popped out, but you can just press it back in,’ she advised.

‘WOAAHHHH there she goes!’ someone posted.

Ahead of the special hitting screens, Nigella explained how her unique descriptions come from ‘fear filling the silence’.

‘I think often in cooking, metaphor is a better conveyor of taste and texture, which in a way, are not that easily pinpointed in concrete words – because it’s an atmosphere, or the connotations a particular taste might have,’ she told The Independent.

Nigella Lawson.
Nigella recently said she just ‘waffled on’ when the camera was on her (Picture: BBC)

‘But as you can tell, I just waffle on until someone stops me.’

However sometimes even she gets caught off guard by her comments.

‘I don’t have a script, so when Dom Cyriax, my director, says action, I just start blabbering. I have an idea of certain things I need to say in terms of the cooking, but I’m not always sure beyond that.

‘Sometimes I think, “why did that come out? Why did that happen?”. But it does.’

Nigella’s Amsterdam Christmas is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Nigella Lawson has new name for the ‘mee-cro-wah-vey’

Nigella Lawson has admitted she can’t quite bring herself to say ‘mee-cro-wah-vay’ anymore, after *that* iconic moment.

The celebrity chef, 63, went down in TV history back in 2020, when she rebranded the household kitchen appliance with her pronunciation.

And after being made into a meme, she’s now admitted she’s too self-conscious to say it like that anymore.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast today, Nigella admitted that she doesn’t call a microwave the ‘mee-cro-wah-vay’ anymore.

She said: ‘I wasn’t quite aware I’d said it because that’s what I’d call it at home.

‘What’s quite interesting is that a lot of people got in touch with me to tell me what their family mispronunciations are, because so many families do have that.’

Despite the fan-mail, Nigella won’t say it anymore.

‘It’s made me quite self-conscious now,’ she said.

‘I tend to refer to it as the you-know-what now.’

Earlier this week, Nigella returned to our screens with her Christmas special, where she dropped plenty of innuendos and even casually mentioned her Drag Queen name.

Opening out some Speculaas dough, she’d said: ‘Let’s unwrap this fat patty – my Drag name.’

Nigella Lawson and Gwyneth Paltrow have led tributes to restaurateur and TV chef Bill Granger after his death aged 54 on Christmas Day.

The Australian culinary star, who founded the Granger & Co restaurants in London and fronted a BBC food show, ‘died peacefully in hospital’ on Christmas Day, according to a statement from his family on social media.

Paying tribute on social media, food writer and TV cook Nigella, 63, said: ‘I’m heartbroken to hear this. So cruel.’

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth, 51, was also among those who replied to the Granger family’s online statement.

‘Oh my goodness, this is so heartbreaking! Love to you all,’ she wrote.

Remembering Granger, Hollywood actor Hugh, 55, wrote on his Instagram Stories in a joint tribute with ex-wife Deborra-Lee Furness: ‘We are devastated to hear the news of Bill’s passing.

‘His talent, his joie de vivre, the way he brought people together, and his commitment to family were inspiring.’

‘We will miss his friendship most of all. Our love goes out to Natalie and their three incredible daughters Edie, Ines and Bunny.’

British TV chef Jamie Oliver, 48, paid tribute to Granger on social media and said the news of his death was ‘devastating.’

He said: ‘This is devastating news, I’m so sad to hear this, what a guy he was… a wonderful human, kind calm soul….’

‘I admired everything he represented in food, I remember the first time I met him many moons ago he couldn’t have been nicer and his food so good…’

Actor Richard E Grant shared a row of heartbreak emojis while Australian singer and actor Jason Donovan dubbed Granger a ‘ray of Aussie sunshine.’

Granger founded his first restaurant, called Bills, which gained recognition for its breakfast dishes, specifically scrambled eggs, in the Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst.

He opened several more across his native Australia and later brought the franchise to Japan.

In the UK, Granger established his first Granger & Co restaurant in Notting Hill before expanding across the capital in locations including King’s Cross.

On TV, Granger fronted six-part series, Bill’s Food, which was aired on the BBC, and also appeared on GMTV for a barbeque special in 2006.

He later helmed Bill’s Holiday, which featured Granger’s travels exploring the varying regions and produce of Australia, and Bill’s Kitchen: Notting Hill.

In 2019 he was among the chefs, including Tom Kerridge and Prue Leith, sharing the secrets behind the dishes that had shaped their lives in the documentary series My Greatest Dishes.

Announcing his death, Granger’s family wrote on Instagram: ‘It is with great sadness that the family of Bill Granger announce he has passed away on 25th December at the age of 54.

Instagram

‘A dedicated husband and father, Bill died peacefully in hospital with his wife Natalie Elliott and three daughters, Edie, Ines and Bunny, at his bedside in their adopted home of London.

‘Born in Melbourne, Australia, Bill was a self-taught cook who became a celebrated global restaurateur and food writer with a career spanning over 30 years.’

The statement published on Boxing Day added: ‘He will be deeply missed by all, with his loss most profoundly felt by his adored family, who are grateful for all the love and support that has been given.’

Granger is survived by his wife Natalie Elliott and three daughters, Edie, Inès and Bunny.

MasterChef Australia: Nigella Lawson makes surprise appearance in kitchen via full body hologram

MasterChef Australia proved that even border lockdowns will stop Nigella Lawson from making an impression in a kitchen.

The British chef sent viewers into a frenzy by popping up unexpectedly thanks to a full-body hologram/video call that stood perfectly next to the hosts.

Currently, Nigella is unable to fly into Australia due to coronavirus lockdown rules restricting who can come in and out of the country, with everyone entering having to do a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

But when there’s a will, there’s a way, and fans of the cooking series were delighted to see Nigella pop up for the latest series from London

Hosting an elimination challenge, Nigella read out her delicious recipe for the wannabe chefs to take on.

First, the remaining contestants were asked to identify the ingredients to 18 different types of biscuit in 15 minutes.

Conor Curran, Brent Draper, Maja Veit, Yoyo Yang and Tom Levick were the least successful in the mission – so were pitted head-to-head in a different challenge.

Using only Nigella’s descriptions, the five had to bake a toasted marshmallow and rhubarb cake.

But viewers were enchanted with Nigella and her iconically descriptive language, saying it was lulling them to sleep.

nigella

Nigella is one of many stars making an appearance for this year’s series, with famous faces including Gordon Ramsay able to make it for filming before lockdown took place.

For Nigella’s episode, the full body LED screen allowed Nigella to call into the show live, meaning she could interact with the chefs as if she was there (even if it meant she couldn’t talk to them).

Judge Andy Allen, who was in the studio, was seen having fun with the piece of technology, offering the star a biscuit while she had a cup of tea.

Now if only we had the technology to make that work…

Nigella Lawson’s pronunciation of ‘microwave’ has officially been nominated for a Bafta.

The chef – who recently became a hologram on MasterChef Australia – was turned into an immediate viral sensation after warming up milk in her ‘mee-cro-wah-vay’, for a mash potato dish.

But Nigella faces some stiff competition as one of six nominees up for the Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment Award, which is voted for by the public.

Also in the running is Diversity’s Black Lives Matter routine on Britain’s Got Talent, which saw a staggering uprising in support from ITV and its stars after a flock of Ofcom complaints.

Lady Whistledown being revealed on Netflix’s Bridgerton, Chantelle Atkins’ death at the hands of Gray in EastEnders and Luke Skywalker’s shock appearance in Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian have also received nominations.

The cast of Gogglebox tearing apart Boris Johnson’s press conferences completes the shortlist.

David Bouchier, chief TV and entertainment officer at Virgin Media, said: ‘2020 was a year like no other and great television was at the heart of every moment that kept the nation connected, entertained and informed.

‘Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment recognises the TV moments that played such a powerful role in all of our lives throughout the past year.’

This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Richard Ayoade, using a studio-based production due to the ongoing coronavirus social distancing expectations.

The TV Baftas will be broadcast on BBC One on June 6.

Nigella Lawson doing the absolute most to bring on a heatwave for us

Nigella Lawson.
Nigella has just done something that spells the end of the cold weather (Picture: Ten)

If we find the weather turns on the weekend and we’re bathed in sunshiney bliss we know who to thank – our lord and saviour Nigella Lawson.

Seeing as we’re still getting about under umbrellas and in our puffer jackets in May of all months, the chef has done her bit in order to make sure the chill goes away.

The TV chef shared with her followers today that she’d gone out and bought some winter gear which, as Sod’s Law will always tell us, will immediately bring about warm temperatures and not a raindrop in sight.

Nigella mused on Twitter on Wednesday: ‘Just want you to know I’ve done my best to bring about warmer weather by buying two polo neck jumpers from Zara!’

In response we may have just gone and bought our own polo necks…you know, just to really do our own bit to make sure this sordid weather is finally in the bin.

Fans of the Cook, Eat, Repeat author had hoped for a swift shift, with one replying: ‘Nigella, you always bring joy…even if you don’t succeed in changing the weather!’

Wanting some more intel on this wet weather buster, one follower inquired: ‘Your noble sacrifice is noted! Important question, though. Are they snuggly and lovely?’

While her new clothes may not be heat-appropriate, Nigella has clearly got the set-up fit for the sunshine as she recently shared a rare photo of her snazzy home’s outdoor area, complete with what appeared to be a conservatory that led out onto a paved area with bright-pink outdoor furniture.

‘Garden looking bright and beautiful after the rain!’ she wrote, with lush trees framing the shot and providing optimum privacy.

The good news is it’s said a ‘mini-heatwave’ could finally be heading for the UK after the Bank Holiday weekend following a pretty miserable May.

Although the bad weather is largely set to continue until the end of the month (joy of joys), the forecasts are looking much more positive once we head into June, as the magic of Nigella’s sweaters is fully realised.

Piers Morgan and Nigella Lawson have led the commiserations to the men’s England team after they lost out to Italy at the nail-biting Euro 2020 final tonight.

The tense game went to extra time and then a penalty shoot-out to decide the winners after the teams were level at 1-1 after extra time, but it was Italy who came out on top.

Celebrities have been behind the players all day today, with many coming out in full force to back them before the game kicked off.

Kate Moss and her daughter Lila strutted down to Wembley in England shirts, while Tom Cruise and David Beckham were seen fist bumping after Luke Shaw scored the first goal of the match.

And now, despite their loss, they’re still standing beside them and have voiced their praise for Gareth Southgate and the rest of the team for making the country proud.

Nigella Lawson removes the word ‘slut’ from dessert recipe due to ‘cruel connotation’

Nigella Lawson has removed the word ‘slut’ from one of her recipes, saying it has taken on a ‘cruel’ connotation.

The TV chef is known for her flamboyant turn of phrase in her presenting and recipe writing, most recently changing the way we all pronounce ‘microwave’.

However, she has reconsidered some of the more tongue-in-cheek titles of past recipes due to changing slang.

The 61-year-old shares a daily recipe on Twitter from her back catalogue of cookbooks, and recently posted the recipe for Ruby Red Raspberries in Chardonnay Jelly.

She tweeted: ‘#RecipeOfTheDay is a dream of a dessert, and so easy to make. If you’ve never tried home-made jelly before, now’s your chance: Ruby Red Raspberries in Chardonnay Jelly for the win!’

While the picture of the dessert got tummies rumbling, a handful of followers noticed that the raspberry and jelly concoction was previously called ‘Slut Red Raspberries in Chardonnay Jelly’ when first published in Nigella’s 2002 cookbook Forever Summer.

One person asked: ‘Wonderful recipe (as always!) but it makes me wonder what has happened to this country when we can’t even call that recipe by its hilarious original name. What has happened to our free speech, humour and a sense fun? I love your turn of phrase Nigella!’

Nigella responded: ‘I feel that the word has taken on a coarser, more cruel connotation, and I’m not happy with that.’

She also addressed the name change on her website, writing: ‘This recipe has had a slight name change, but is the same dessert of dreams: the wine-soused raspberries take on a stained glass, lucent red, their very raspberriness enhanced; the soft, translucently pale coral just-set jelly in which they sit has a heady, floral fragrance that could make a grateful eater weep.’

The raspberry dessert isn’t the only one of Nigella’s recipes to get a title tweak.

Earlier this month, the star posted a recipe for ‘Slattern’s Spaghetti’, her version of pasta alla puttanesca, which is usually translated to ‘whore’s spaghetti’.

Nigella explained on her website: ‘Although you will often see its Italian name explained as meaning “whore’s pasta” in English, the general consensus seems to be, however, that this is the sort of dish cooked by slatterns who don’t go to market to get their ingredients fresh, but are happy to use stuff out of cans and jars.

‘I recently had a Twitter conversation with one Jim Hewitt about the new name for this and I gratefully end with this fabulous message of his: “On those days when my mum couldn’t be bothered to brush her hair and cooked dinner using whatever was in the cupboard she would say: ‘Hush. I’m slatterning!’”This is perfect for a slatterning day.’

Since her first book How to Eat: Pleasures and Principles of Good Food was published in 1998, Nigella has published a further 13 cookbooks, most recently Nigella’s Cook, Eat, Repeat, which was released last year.

The book was accompanied by a BBC series and Christmas special, during which Nigella whipped up fish finger bhorta, a curry made from banana skins and crab mac and cheese.

Nigella Lawson and Jessica Chastain have led tributes to Richard E Grant’s wife of 35 years Joan Washington, following her death aged 71.

Washington was a voice coach with nearly 40 years experience in the film industry, and worked with actors including Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone and Vanessa Redgrave.

Her husband Richard, known for films including Withnail And I and Can You Ever Forgive Me? confirmed she died on Thursday, in a post on Twitter, and described her impact on their family as an ‘immeasurable gift’.

Jessica Chastain, who worked with Washington on films including The Debt, 2011’s Coriolanus starring Ralph Fiennes and Crimson Peak, shared a picture with the late coach and tweeted: ‘My heart is broken. Joan Washington had such a profound impact on me, yes as an artist, but mostly as a woman. I’ve looked toward her. Her strive towards excellence made her the celebrated dialect coach she was.

‘We worked together on The Debt, Poirot, Coriolanus, Miss Julie, Crimson Peak, The Zookeeper’s Wife, & The 355. Every day I was excited to go to work and giggle with Joan. She was a barometer of truth with a wicked sense of humor. I loved her very much.

‘The way she celebrated her family has been very meaningful to see over the years. My heart goes to her beloved Richard and Oilly. You were always her North Star.’

Nigella Lawson tweeted: ‘What a wonderful woman Joan Washington was. And how devastating to have to say ‘was’. My heart’s broken for @RichardEGrant and @OliviaGranted. May her memory be a blessing.’

Musical theatre star Elaine Page tweeted: ‘It’s heartbreaking to hear of Joan Washington’s passing. She was special both as a teacher & as a friend. Never to be forgotten. My deepest sympathy to Richard & all the family.’

The Crown star Jason Watkins described Washington as ‘incomparable’ and recalled receiving lessons from her as a young actor.

‘Joan taught me dialects and accents when I trained at @Rada and beyond,” he said.

‘I have made my career using accents and dialects. I owe her everything. Such a terrible loss to @RichardEGrant and us all. Rest in Peace.’

Comedians Sarah Millican, Dawn French and David Baddiel were also among those sending messages of support.

Dawn tweeted: ‘Joan Washington will ALWAYS be remembered by those of us who knew her & were taught by her, as a PHENOMENAL WOMAN. So much love to @RichardEGrant & all the family.’

Richard, 64, announced the news on Friday by sharing a video of them dancing together to the song Only You by The Platters on Twitter.

He wrote: ‘ONLY YOU! Joan – Love of my Life & Giver of Life to our daughter Olivia.

‘Our hearts are broken with the loss of your Life last night. 35 years married & 38 together.

‘To be truly known and seen by you, is your immeasurable gift. Do not forget us, sweet Monkee-mine.’

He and Washington married in 1986 and had a daughter, Olivia, and Tom, a son from Washington’s previous relationship.

Washington, from Aberdeen, trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and had nearly 40 years experience in the film industry as a voice and dialect coach.

Among her early projects in the mid-80s were Yentl starring Barbra Streisand, Highlander, and The Bounty, featuring Mel Gibson and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Recent years saw her work on features such as The Witches, where she coached Anne Hathaway for the part of the Grand High Witch, and Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy The Favourite, where she worked with Emma Stone.

In a joint interview with the Independent in 2011, Grant recalled them meeting for the first time.

He said: ‘I met her at the Actors’ Centre in London. She was wearing a boiler suit and had fairly short, cropped hair and Kicker shoes, and was chain-smoking, which I thought was insane.

‘She was teaching an accent session with a bunch of actors, and I thought she had the most wonderful voice and huge, sort of monkey eyes. She seemed fairly frenetic. I thought that she was really cute and all that. It was December 1982.’

Nigella Lawson was the latest iconic star to be imitated on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’s Snatch Game episode and gave her verdict after giving Ella Vaday’s portrayal a watch.

The Snatch Game instalment is a highlight of the series and something fans look forward to in all the franchises.

Season three of Drag Race UK hosted the episode last week, which featured impersonations such as Gemma Collins, Amy Childs and Nigella from the queens.

Ella, who was in character as the legendary TV cook and food writer, even caught the attention of the woman herself.

All fans wanted to know was whether Nigella had seen the fabulous take on herself and it turns out, she has!

The Drag Race UK official account asked: ‘Please tell us you’ve seen @ellavaday ‘s snatch game @Nigella_Lawson. #DragRaceUK.’

Nigella soon wrote back: ‘I have and Ella was fab!’

Responding to another fan, she added: ‘I have now caught up with it and have nothing but admiration for the divine Ella! Have a great weekend, yourself!’

One other fan, who explained how ‘nervous’ she was for Ella’s take on the star, also got a response from Nigella.

The TV favourite wrote back: ‘*You* were nervous!! Imagine how I felt before watching it! But impossible not to be charmed by the fabulous Ella.’

Ella even paid homage to Nigella’s infamous ‘meecro-wah-vey’ moment during the segment, which was previously nominated for a Bafta for the must-see moment of the year.

Fans were also impressed with the take on culinary royalty with one sharing on Twitter: ‘Ella as Nigella Lawson, that’s it that’s the tweet #DragRaceUK.’

‘Ella Vaday gave me the Nigella I wanted and she should’ve won the reading challenge as well. #DragRaceUK,’ shared another.

Another commented: ‘Waiting for and then reading Nigella’s reactions to Snatch Game are the most invested I’ve ever been in Twitter #DragRaceUK.’

One fan echoed: ‘Ella Vaday as Nigella Lawson is making me feel a lot of things #DragRaceUK.’

The episode grew even more tense after the excitement of Snatch Game calmed down, with Ru sneaking a double elimination in.

Unfortunately, it was Chorizo May and River Medway who were told to ‘sashay away,’ – but who will end up becoming the UK’s next Drag Race Superstar?

Drag Race UK airs Thursdays from 7pm on BBC iPlayer.

Nigella Lawson has revealed she loves a late-night chip kebab, offering up her perfect recipe to fans whilst appearing on TV in Australia.

The much-loved cook is quite the national treasure and even received a Bafta nomination for must-see moment last year.

She went viral after warming up milk in her ‘mee-cro-wah-vay’, for a mash potato dish in 2020 in the series Cook, Eat, Repeat.

Fans became obsessed with the moment and now Nigella has shown us she’s still the most relatable TV cook as she shared her love of chip kebabs.

Currently in Australia to attend the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, she appeared on the talk show The Project to chat about all things food.

Nigella was asked by host Carrie Bickmore: ‘Nigella, are you a hot chips lady or a kebab lady?’

‘Well, I rather like a chip kebab,’ she responded, before telling viewers how to achieve perfection with theirs.

‘One of my favourites is flatbread, humous, a bit of lemon zest, chips, some lemon juice and salt and wrap it up.

‘Now, that is so good. So wonderful,’ she added.

Carrie replied: ‘Yum, I want one now,’ with Nigella joking: ‘Why haven’t you got one?!’

Nigella has been appearing on MasterChef Australia in recent years and often spends time Down Under.

She joined the eighth series of the show as a guest judge, alongside the returning judges, before returning to the show for the tenth series in 2018 and the eleventh series in 2019.

During the chat, she addressed her famous mee-cro-wah-vay moment when asked if she had any more fun words she uses around the house.

Nigella shared: ‘I have other words I use, you know how all families have those words.

‘If I get some new appliance I have to read the destructions… if I’m going to meet someone, I have to text them to say I’m en-croute.’

She revealed she ‘wasn’t even aware I’d said that out loud’ and explained: ‘I would say that at home, when I did it, it’s just a joke, mispronouncing words.

‘You can end up speaking in a language that is a bit of a bonkers side!

‘That was filmed in a brief window in lockdown so I can’t be held accountable for the state of my mind then,’ Nigella laughed.

Annie Mac’s unusual pronunciation of ‘kneading’ on Celebrity Bake Off is nothing short of iconic

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

Annie Mac revealed her obscure pronunciation of the word ‘kneading’ during Celebrity Bake Off on Tuesday night and we’ll never say it the same way again.

The DJ and podcaster, who was among the stars competing in the Stand Up To Cancer charity special, joined the likes of Ed Gamble, Example, and Matt Lucas in the tent.

For the technical challenge, the contestants were tasked with making six identical raspberry doughnuts, and Annie was keen to hammer her dough by ‘nedding’ it.

Yes, it looks like Nigella Lawson’s ‘microwavé’ has competition!

‘Maybe I should do a bit more nedding,’ Annie said. Talking viewers through the process, she continued: ‘You’re trying to get more air into it, so it’s less dense.

‘The only way you do that is by nedding it.’

Presenter Noel Fielding was rather amused by Annie’s unique take on the word and confronted her about it.

‘Word on the street is that instead of kneading dough you keep saying “nedding” dough,’ he said.

‘Just because I don’t know the baking lingo!’ Annie retorted.

‘In my opinion, it’s an upgrade,’ Noel replied. ‘Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.’

It’s safe to say viewers were a little stunned by Annie’s pronounciation, with one writing:  ‘Wait, Annie Mac pronounces “kneading” nedding?’

Others, however, were quick to share gifs of The Simpsons character Ned Flounders.

Each year, The Great Celebrity Stand Up To Cancer sees a host of celebrity bakers head to the tent, in an attempt to raise some money and cause some chaos in the kitchen.

This year’s crop of 19 celebrities includes Sir Mo Farah, singer Ellie Goulding and Strictly Come Dancing judge Motsi Mabuse.

Other stars putting their baking skills to the test include comedian and creator of Taskmaster Alex Horne, TV presenter Emma Willis, and choirmaster Gareth Malone.

Also hoping to impress the judges are actor and author Ben Miller, The Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison, and TV and radio presenter Clara Amfo.

Former Coronation Street actress Katherine Kelly, TV presenter Laura Whitmore, writer and comedian Mawaan Rizwan, TV star Ruby Wax, TV presenter Sophie Morgan, Friday Night Dinner’s Tracy-Ann Oberman and musician Yung Filly complete the line-up.

Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer 2022 returns Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.

Nigella Lawson throws her hat in the ring to host Eurovision 2023 – and we are so here for this

Celebrity cook and all-round hun Nigella Lawson has told fans she would love to host Eurovision if it does indeed come to the UK next year.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) yesterday announced that the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest will not be held in Ukraine after Kalush Orchestra’s win last month.

In a statement, they explained that options were explored to try and make the contest happen in Ukraine, amid the Russian invasion, but that it would not be possible to make it work.

Due to the UK act Sam Ryder finishing as runner-up, the nation is now looking the most likely to take over hosting duties, with the EBU revealing they would be starting discussions with the BBC.

This means avid viewers are already listing the names they’d love to see in the presenting team, with Rylan Clark, AJ Odudu and Scott Mills among those already put forward.

But in response to a tweet sharing the news that the UK could host next year, cook Nigella teased she could be the next Katie Boyle.

Katie was a TV star and actress who presented the Eurovision Song Contest on four occasions, in 1960, 1963, 1968 and 1974.

Nigella wrote: ‘Waiting for my Katie Boyle moment! Why else get a languages degree?’

Of course, fans quickly backed Nigella and pleaded with the BBC to make it happen.

One wrote on Twitter: ‘Oh yes, you would be absolutely perfect 🤩.’

‘Make. It. Happen. Please @Nigella_Lawson and @BBCBreaking,’ said another.

Someone else commented: ‘Oh my god – this would be HEAVEN! The glorious Nigella hosting Eurovision! I’m still overwhelmed at your quadrilingual points cameo in 2015.’

Another fan shared: ‘@bbceurovision NIGELLA FOR PRESENTING TEAM 100%.’

Nigella famously brought the results of the UK vote to the continent during the 2015 contest, which was hosted in Vienna, Austria.

The top scorer from the UK that year was the wonderful eventual winner from Sweden, Mans Zelmerlow.

While Eurovision fanatics are understandably, already very excited, the BBC issued a statement in response to the announcement, making it clear discussions are still yet to start.

‘We have seen the announcement from the EBU. Clearly, these aren’t a set of circumstances that anyone would want.

‘Following their decision, we will of course discuss the BBC hosting the Eurovision Song Contest,’ the broadcaster said.

Nigella Lawson lashes out at ‘mean’ cooking shows: ‘A theatre of cruelty and humiliation’

Nigella Lawson has slammed the treatment of aspiring cooks on ‘mean’ programmes, labelling them ‘a theatre of cruelty and humiliation.’

The television chef shut down the possibility of ever appearing in a cooking show that doesn’t prioritise respect among its contestants and crew.

Speaking to Australian Woman’s Weekly about explosive culinary series, the 62-year-old said: ‘I don’t like that at all. I think it’s counterproductive.

‘It makes people at home feel inhibited about cooking too, because they have this persecutory voice in their heads. I couldn’t be part of a programme like that.

‘It doesn’t mean to say you’re not honest, but there’s never a need to be mean.’

Hit series such as Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares have gained a reputation for featuring explosive insults – and lots of shouting.

Some of his insults on his shows include asking a chef if they were ‘stupid’ and telling one, ‘you’re so in denial you need therapy.’

Gordon even parodied himself with James Corden in a skit on The Late Late show where he slapped two pieces of bread around talkshow host Julie Chen’s head and called her an ‘idiot sandwich.’

While Nigella might not be screaming the F-bomb in a fit of rage any time soon on national television, there is another starry job that would take her fancy.

If the UK does indeed host Eurovision in 2023, Nigella teased she would love to present the iconic singing competition.

On Twitter, Nigella wrote: ‘Waiting for my Katie Boyle moment! Why else get a languages degree?’

One wrote on Twitter: ‘Oh yes, you would be absolutely perfect.’

Eurovision dreams aside, Nigella has been spending a lot of time Down Under, having been revealed as a new judge on Aussie show My Kitchen Rules in April.

She’s also appeared multiple times on MasterChef Australia, with the series of Oz gigs making her friends joke about her becoming a ‘regular Aussie commuter.’

Nigella Lawson reveals why she simply cannot use chopsticks

Nigella Lawson may be the Queen of cooking, but that doesn’t mean she knows her way around every kitchen utensil.

Last week, the national treasure was exposed by her My Kitchen Rules co-star Manu Feildel when he revealed she doesn’t know how to use chopsticks.

During a dinner, the cooks were about to tuck into some delicious food but the 62-year-old confessed she was going to struggle to take her first bite as she was incapable of using the cutlery.

Manu, 48, found the whole scenario ‘hilarious’ as he recounted the saga on News.com.au’s podcast I’ve Got News For You.

And the How to Be a Domestic Goddess writer has been totally honest about her lack of chopstick prowess, opening up about the real reason why she has difficulty eating with them.

It turns out the TV chef is ‘completely uncoordinated’ and finds chopsticks ‘particularly hard’ because she’s double-jointed.

‘I’m very incompetent,’ she joked on a video shared on Manu’s Instagram.

Nigella clearly enjoyed the candid chat, commenting on the post: ‘Manu, I could sit on that sofa talking with you forever! And thank you all for such lovely comments.’

Aside from cooking, the Simply Nigella presenter has shared her secret ambition to host the Eurovision Song Contest when it comes to the UK next year.

Nigella Lawson, who is a good friend of Salman Rushdie, has told fans she is ‘distraught’ after the author was attacked ahead of giving a lecture in New York.

Rushdie, 75, was reportedly stabbed in the neck while sitting on stage just as he was about to give a speech.

Multiple stars, including fellow literary greats, have flooded social media with their prayers and well-wishes after he was taken to hospital.

Lawson, who has been a close friend of the Satanic Verses author since she was 23, is amongst the stars to have reacted after he was attacked on stage in New York.

The cookery icon penned: ‘Such shocking news of Salman Rushdie having been stabbed. This is horrific. Am distraught.

‘Please, please let him be ok,’ she added, before being inundated with support from her 2.7million followers.

Journalist and author of Empireland, Sathnam Sanghera, tweeted: ‘Passage from Midnight’s Children in my last ever exam. Poster of The Moor’s Last Sigh had place on my (pretentious) student bedroom wall. Quote from Satanic Verses opens Empireland.

‘Lots of British Asian writers wouldn’t be writers without him. Pray he’s well.’

The incident happened at the Chautauqua Institution, about 55 miles southwest of Buffalo in a rural corner of New York, which hosts a summer lecture series.

The interviewer suffered a ‘minor head injury’ and a New York state trooper ‘assigned to the event immediately took the suspect into custody’.

While the attacker’s motive remains unclear at this stage, the author has been a target since his book The Satanic Verses was released in 1988.

The work, which was partly influenced by the life of Mohammed, was attacked by authoritarian Muslim leaders, most notably the Iranian ayatollah, and is banned in Iran.

Nigella Lawson wants you to add peanut butter to your pasta in this budget-friendly recipe

Peanut butter and pasta?

It might sound a bit odd, we know, but if there’s anyone whose food combinations we trust, it’s Nigella Lawson.

The chef has just revealed a budget-friendly recipe for her ‘dreamy, creamy’ peanut butter pasta as part of a new partnership with Ocado, featuring four new recipes and a ‘Nigella Loves’ edit of her favourite products.

All the recipes Nigella has come up with for the collab are designed to feed a family of four for under £1.25 per person, showing you don’t have to spend a load of cash for a tasty dinner.

You can find out how to make a Nigella-approved stir fry, a black bean and cous cous dish, and a speedy steamed sponge, over on the Ocado website (with more meals to come throughout the year), but to get you started, we’ve got the most controversial dinner of the bunch right here.

Italians, you might want to look away. Or, be brave, rummage in your kitchen cupboards, and get cooking. You could just find your new favourite midweek meal.

Nigella’s creamy, dreamy peanut butter pasta recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 240g pack baby spinach
  • 1 tbsp fine salt, plus ¼ tsp for the sauce
  • 320g spaghetti
  • 75g smooth peanut butter
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp chilli flakes
  • ½ unwaxed lemon, juiced, plus wedges to serve
  • 1 large pinch of paprika, for dusting (optional)
nigella lawson peanut butter pasta
Give it a go (Picture: Nigella Lawson/Ocado)

Method:

  1. Get out a large pan that comes with a tightly fitting lid, and fill it with 2.5L water from a just-boiled kettle. Clamp on the lid, and bring the water back to the boil on a large burner on your hob. Sit a large colander in the sink, break open your bag of baby spinach leaves with gusto and tip the contents into the waiting colander.
  2. Get out a clean tea towel (not a terry towelling or waffle one, just a smooth, thin one) and take it over to the stove. Once the water’s boiling vigorously, add 1tbsp fine salt, which will make the water rise up fizzingly. Wait for it to subside, then give it a good stir and, once the water’s boiling again, add the pasta, and stir with a pasta fork to help it submerge. Once the water has come back to the boil, cook for 2 mins, stirring often to detangle and declump the spaghetti. Once the 2 mins are up, take the pan off the heat – though just to a neighbouring burner – cover with your tea towel and clamp on the lid for 8 mins, during which you can prepare your remaining ingredients.
  3. Remove the lid and tea towel, give the spaghetti a good old stir, then scoop out 500ml of the starchy pasta cooking liquid with a jug or mug: it’s this that makes the sauce so luxuriously creamy. If you taste a strand of pasta, you should find it’s almost properly cooked, but still has a tiny bit of bite to it.
  4. Drain the pasta into the spinach-filled colander – thereby wilting the leaves – and take the pan back to the hob, leaving the colander in the sink for now. Quickly spoon the peanut butter into the warm pan and add about 125ml of the reserved pasta cooking water and stir well. It will look grainy and alarming at first, and when you look at the curdled clumps, you’ll think something’s gone wrong. It hasn’t! Just carry on stirring, adding the minced garlic, dried thyme, chilli flakes, 2 tsp lemon juice and ¼ tsp salt, and you will swiftly see a pale, herb-flecked emulsion come into being. Slowly stir in another 125ml of the pasta water until that too has been smoothly incorporated.
  5. Add the spag‘n’spinach and stir and toss in the pan (I use a couple of forks) to mix everything together as evenly as possible. You’ll need to keep adding more of the reserved pasta water, as the pasta will keep drinking it up, so keep adding a little at a time, stirring vigorously but carefully; you shouldn’t have more than 50ml left, though you might well use it all. Taste for seasoning – you may need more salt or lemon juice – then serve, making sure you give everyone an even amount of spinach. If wished, lightly dust the top of each bowl with paprika. And if you have half a lemon left over, you could slice it into thin wedges and give one to each person to squeeze as they eat.

While I find it unlikely that it won’t all be gobbled, any leftovers make for a wonderful cold noodly lunch the next day, when I like to spritz it with a little extra lemon juice and sprinkle over a few more chilli flakes.

Nigella Lawson has been spotted walking arm in arm with entrepreneur, Alex Fane.

The pair were pictured sharing a roadside picnic together and walked arm in arm in casual outfits back to her car.
